Buying a Cue

Soon soon soon I shall be in Canada for the year, and I'll be needing a pool cue.

I don't know what kind of level I'd be over your side of the Atlantic, even after I've got a feel for the tables and larger balls. I'm a pretty good league player in the UK though.

Sooo..... I'll be looking for a decent cue, I probably can't spend that much on it - maybe US $60 to 75 (I know Canada's different, but since most of you will be in the US it seemed like the currency to quote). Is that a good price range?
Maybe I could (should?) stretch to more.

I'm looking for something that's basically of good quality - something that'll hit true and will be built to last.

Doesn't need to be perfect, professional standard. Just something I can trust which won't hold me back.

So, how much do I need to spend? Any recommendations?

Oh, and do you think my airline will be happy for me to fly back with it after the year?

First the FAA has announced that no objects that could potentially be used as a weapon will be allowed as carry-on baggage, this includes cues. as far as buying a good cue I hope that you can come up with some more money.

Probably your best bet would be to buy a Cuetec. I think it's about the best buy for the small amount of money that you're talking about. Most decent cues start out at about $300 I believe depending on where you buy it. Another way to go is to find action and buy a used cue from the loser. You'll likely get a bargain and someone will be able to get back a some of their losses.

for your price,,,,,,fury cues

I have noticed that FURY and Action cues are EXACTLY the same cue models, but with different woods or inlays. Why such a hype for the FURY cues, but no one knows about the Action cue line. It's the same cue with a different name! I've never played with a FURY cue yet, but have the Action cues, they are fine for the money.

For about $150 you can get a low end McDermott or Viking cue. IMO that's a great cue for a low price and that would be what I'd look for if I was shopping on a budget, but didn't want a "cheap" cue!!

Normally, the cue prices of fair quality cues is about $300 +.
Cuetecs at $75 plus is a decent buy.
Once you get over the pond, you will probably find more of an upscale cue, that you will be dying to get!!!

Fury Cues

The Fury Cue is a quality cue. You can find them on Nineballking.com at http://www.nineballking.com/pool-cues-fury.html. They are not the same as Action cues and are played with by three of the top five players on the Pro Tour. The DL series is perfect for you budget because they are $75.00. They are the highest quality cues I have ever seen for under a $100.00. The NR Series and RP are more expensive, but this is because they have inlays, instead of decals. The DL's have Irish Pressed Linen, Pro Taper, Le Pro Tips, Fiber Ferrules, and Rock Maple Shafts. If you have any more questions about cues, please call me toll free.

Fury vs. Action...

Wow! You're absolutely right, they are not the same as the Action line...

here is the Fury NR-5 model...

Action Elite model 09...

and here's the butt of the AE09...
I just find it hard to believe that these are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT cue makers/manufacturers. I apologize fully to FURY if I'm totally incorrect here, but I've seen a FURY, seen and have shot with an Action and they look, feel, and are priced the same.

a friend of mine wanted to play with a metal jointed cue before buying one. so he bought a $75 fury. he thought it was a cheap way to play as long as he wanted to get used to the cue. he said it played great.
i personally, could not believe the quality for the price,,,,and those aren't decals in the points.

Quality of Fury Cues

I could play with any cue I want, since I own a billiard website, but I play with a Fury cue. They are really a great playing cue. Look nice to.

There's always the Dufferin "Phantom" Sneaky Pete (about $70 U.S.).

You'd be better off shipping it back home using FedEx or something like that... too many problems with the airlines, IMHO.

Hmm, Fury, Action, Cuetec, Dufferin...

I'll make sure to remember those, I'll probably take a look at the lot of them, and go with whatever feels 'right'.

I guess I'll have problems getting it home in a year's time, but I can cross that bridge when I get to it.

Do they tend to travel well by post?

I've found in my travels overseas both to Europe and Asia, that Priority Mail is the best way to go.

Actually Plato, I don't carry McDermott's right now! I was giving a sincere recommendation to someone who needed one. Thanks for the comment. Next time be sure to give out my website, www.zimsrack.com

Thanks,

Play with a housecue. Experiment with different weights. When you can run break and run out a rack fairly consistently, then look at buying something because you'll know by then what you like. Buddy Hall was on the road playing with nothing but housecues, beating Champions. A good player can play with anything. If you feel like you must have something, buy a cheap sneaky pete. Put a decent tip on it, possibly change the taper of the shaft to satisfy you and you're in business. Who really cares about inlays? As long as the ball drops when you want it to.
