Buying a new cue

Looking for a new cue? I have been playing with McDermott cues since 1984. Recently, my G-core shaft felt a bit off; I was not sure if it was my imagination or what but I sent it back to Menomonee Falls and they said it had a very slight convection (that, for some reason I had not noticed but had caused by too much 80 grit sand paper) and a week later I had a brand new shaft. Years ago my McDermott break cue developed a barely perceptible wobble and they replaced that unhesitatingly despite the fact that I told them that my table is practically outside in my Seattle shop. They could have said with total legitimacy; “Our warrantee does not cover damp, freezing playing environments”. Although I usually play with a beautiful old McDermott I love their traditional “Hustlers” for their inconspicuousness, weight, balance and playability. Of course there are some fantastic artisan cue makers out there but if you want the security of a Hard-rock Maple warrantee then I recommend a McDermott.

Your title made it seem like you were looking for a new cue LOL, I read the post and though, if you like your McD so much why are you switching, then realized you were just posting that McD is a good company. Another thing I like about them is that even their cheap line is good, and have the same pin as their US made stuff. Their pin is also used by quite a few custom cue makers, so any shafts you end up collecting over the years you can use on several cues to find a hit you like, or swap around.

This may be a bad thing at times, my son has 3-4 cues and 3-4 shafts and he seems to be using a different combination weekly.

I second the customer service from McDermott. Has always been top notch in my book and they have great products to boot as well!

I was disappointed to find that the shaft diameter at the joint can vary greatly. I have two mcd' s, a plain merry widow with a maple shaft and a fancier one with a gcore. While the pin is the same, there is a very big difference in diameters at the joint...
