I buy for many different reasons, I don't limit my cue buying to only one factor it can be one or a combination of factors: playability, style, age, collectability, materials, design, cuemaker, resale, appreaction etc.

From Sneaky Pete's to High end cues. They are all important to me in different ways.

The word " playability" is the most over used, miss used and abused word in the cue world.

playability is subjective isn't it? and that would require you being able to play with the cue before you're able to purchase it. (Not many people have the ability to do that.) Otherwise you're going by the reputation of the cuemaker for making a good hitting cue. And then again, the playability can change from cue to cue depending on material and construction even from the same cuemaker...

All true but doesn't take away from the fact that most consider it to be one of the most important aspects to buying a cue. Unless of course you are a collector of high end cues which then it would probably be aesthetics.

As for going with the reputation of the cuebuilder, most times this is all you can do. I did this very thing and wound up selling it immediately. This is why playability is so subjective. Someone else may love the way the cue hit but I couldn't stand it. Usually, if it's a reputable maker, you will at least get your money back so really, no harm no foul.

Yes, playability is subjective but the question is "why do YOU buy a cue?" One man's garbage is another man's treasure.

I also know that it is a combination of all the factors listed....and then some. I just want to stimulate a conversation on what is most important to YOU when YOU look to buy a cue.

I don't know if "feel" falls under Playability, but i've always have chose my cues for feel: Weight, diameter, shaft, and wrap. Looks then come last.

maker AND playability.

"playability" is a given.

"maker" because of integrity, quality construction, and attention to design detailing.

It's all about feel for me. I have a Dufferin, a South West , a Dishaw, and a Joss. They all hit wonderful, that is why I bought them. Best deal was the dufferin for $20 and it hits like a champ and looks like Crap. LOL

Well. Like a woman, i'm attracted to the looks first....that catches my attention. If it's ......well you know... i won't even look so i'll never play with it.. if it's WOWza, then i need a better look.
After i have it in my hands and test drive it a bit, i decide if i like the way she plays <or not> i may then consider taking her home for good. But i have to figure how how maintenance or how much it i have to give up for her... and can i live with that
looks-play-cost..... a trio
oh wait- that was women i was talking about... oh wait- same answer for cues anyways...... :-)
