It has come to my attention that some cuemakers and repair persons use CA glue to seal the edges of the tip. I'm assuming this glue needs to have some decent flexibility for it not to crack.
What specific glue do you use?
This made me think of what happened to me a few days ago. I was practicing some extreme draw shots with a guy preparing to go to a tournament soon. He showed me a routine he had for that and I tried it. When I got to my most extreme draw I miscued and launched the white ball. Now, I haven't done that in some time and immediately I looked at my tip.
My tip is burnished on the side. I noticed a definitive line, a crease of sorts. I could not feel it, or catch it with my nail, but even with my crappy eyes I could see it. I was conscious of it the rest of the afternoon and stayed away from it when I shot. I had a another shaft with me but was playing with my preferred Scruggs shaft/tip. Considering that I was losing my ass I figured I better stay with my preferred to my grave.
I have never seen anything other than a good burnish that worked well on the side of tips. I play mostly with Le Pro tips, and not layered, so I may be stupid and too damn old school.
CA? I can't imagine that would work well, but crazy things can be true.
Oh, in that exercise I did draw farther/better than he did...but he still beat my ass in the games. LOL!
I still have some skills, but putting it together in a game/match is a whole different ball of wax.
I don't think I want CA anywhere near my friction point between my tip and the white ball. It does not seem right to me.
I can remember a time not all that long ago (in my mind) when people said CA isn't even a proper finish for anything, but that is another story.
So, I am not a cue maker. Forgive me for jumping in. As a player CA just does not seem to be right anywhere near the playing surface of my tip.
I remember just getting past CA mentally just to put tips on. I did mine for many years by hand and used a kind of contact cement (I think that's what it was). I think I used CA to put a tip on for the first time about 15 years ago. I am a modern thinking guy with training in the sciences but tend to go "old school" and stay with what works until something proves damn well to me that a newer thing works better or at least equivalent.
I feel like this is a matter of the right tool or material for the job. The side of the tip has a job, and I need it to do that, and not f*ck it up while trying. Beyond the support role for the business surface of the tip, it better stay the f*ck out of my way.
Yeah, me too, I always feel like I am interrupting mass in church when I speak up in this forum. LOL!
Well, if I am stupid they will say so and I will deal with it.
CA on the side of tips. Next thing you'll tell me is I should have a CF shaft instead of wood. Maybe I am crazy? Maybe I should finish the whole cue tip and all with a nice shiny coat of whatever the f*ck?
OK, the crazy redhead went to bed and I am up posting.
My final word on this matter: The tip that contacts the ball is the most important part of the cue (sorry cue makers). It is sacred. It is ultimately important. It is Valhalla. If anything approaches it that might interfere with my (meager) abilities, it does not belong there.
