so can you make metal shiny? do you have to tell the program that it's metal, or do you have to do it manually.

yes. for my program everything you would want as metal would have to be another "cylinder". you would then adjust the texture and properties for each ring, collar ect.. and it would look great. as far as let's say silver inlays i would do that manualy in Corel on the flat wrap. it could also be done in the 3d program but it would take some very intensive modeling to do most of my work.

i use a very simple program called Simply 3D. i create the flat layout in Corel Draw complete with textures and the wrap them around the cylinder elements of the cue. i reposition the camera around the cue and save those positions to see different angles. i can make things look photo realistic if i wanted to adjust the lighting and surfaces of the cylinders with more reflective and refractive properties but i only use it to get a general idea of a design. here are some samples:
Very nice work skins you are a very talented designer/artist.

The main difference between the two programs is that the one I use is not just for visualising the end product but also for building a mechanical model of all the pieces. This way after designing a cue I can make a mechanical drawing to use as a reference to build the parts.

thanks for the good words. i seen inventor and i love what you can do with it. maybe someday i'll get a chance to give it try.
