Calcutta question...

Imagine the following situation:

Someone buys you in the calcutta while you are in the bathroom. When you come out, the calcutta buyer is no where to be found. The tournament is about to start and you want half of your calcutta but you can't find the buyer. What happens? Do you actually have a right to buy half of your calcutta or is it more of a courtesy?

Yes you have the option to buy half. Let the TD and auctioneer know. Put your half of the money in their hands to seal it.

What he said but you have to do it before the draw is released.

Go to the bathroom before the draw starts next time. I've seen people deny to let the player they bought buy half of themselves. It's rare, but it happens.

your out of luck and should be. if you are not there you dont get a piece.
the buyer otherwise if you get knocked out will take your money from the td. and if you win will fight not to let you in as he has the right to know who is in with him before the tournament starts.

Not saying you did, but some players will "go to the bathroom " while the draw is held then wait to see what bracket and who they have to play before deciding if they want half or not.

Could also be waiting to see the final amount you go for, might not even have enough money to be in half.

Some are waiting to see how much the total auction is for...then pool their money to get half...whatcha gonna do.

it is customary to let the player buy in a piece of himself, but not mandatory.

most buyers like it as then they know the player is trying and likely wont make a deal that is bad for the buyer as it would hurt him as well.

The calcuttas I've been in, the players allowed to buy half of themselves is mandatory...
...and I agree
I've had players take less than half....and I've let players know that they are getting a consideration if they cash...if they can't afford to buy.

Not allowing a player a piece of his own calcutta is not a good move...whether he's late or not....you want a dog that's gonna run.

Totally agree. You buy me + Don't let me buy half = Dump

It's always good business to let the player buy 1/2 or a 1/4 of himself if he can afford it - I always like to have my player invested right along with me.

If he can't afford it, then let him know that's he's in for a piece if he plays strong and you get paid out - keeps everyone happy and motivated which is want you want.

I wouldn't worry about it,I've never seen a calcutta in a pool tournament ran properly.I wish they would at least learn the correct payout system.

The worst Calcutta I have witnessed was in a small town in south central SD. The bracket was already drawn, and the top 8 players according to the TD were seeded. (there were no spectator fees or a TV table). It was not announced that the bracket was filled out, but if you went to the front table, you could have seen it.

It was the first and only time I played pool in a grocery store. Not many shoppers, but I did have to get out of the way for one patron.

I don't like stuck bids. At this point in my playing, I would choose to not enter a tournament if I might get stuck with myself for another $10. I might enter to get the thrill of the competition and hopefully win a match or two.

My suggestion for those that do not get a minimum bid is to pool them together and sell as a group or two or three depending on how many there are left.
