This has been an interesting experience. Some people agreed with me, but most didn't, and that's fine. Everyone has a right to their opinion, including me.

Depends on your expectations. If you establish the rules as you see them with your opponent prior to the match starting and both parties agree, then fair play. If you expect your opponent to abide by your rules without laying out said rules, you are bad action.

you can do whatever you and your gambling partner agree to

You may have trouble getting a game if you feel like you always have to play by your specified rules. It sounds like you want to play 9 ball using what you describe as call shot 8 ball rules. If you run in to opponents that want to play by their specified rules or by house or tournament rules, good luck getting a game.

And if you get a game by your rules, there’s a good chance your opponent feels they can beat you regardless of your rules, which sounds like it might not be a good game for you.

I assume you’ll also only take a $ game if you can get or give up the spot that you want? Sorry for my bluntness, but you come across here as someone who is used to getting your way?

I can't count the times I have played by their funny rules. Even let them have surprise rule, when they were THAT Weak of a player. 🤷‍♂️
 
My buddy and I play by similar rules. Except, we also allow the option to give the shot back to your opponent if they miss and accidentally safe you. It reduces the luck factor quite a bit.

Customizing the rules in your favor is one of the most fascinating parts of gambling culture. I've seen all kinds of weird rules implemented over the years. Especially when there is a big mismatch in skill level and they are trying to make a fair game.

I played 8-ball at the bar a few weeks ago where the guy said I needed to bank one ball per rack (any ball). That was a little bizarre but I didn't care.

Why in the world would anyone play pool for money without knowing the rules ahead of time? Would you?

The rules in a money game are set by the players of said money game. There are no 'recognized & well established rules'. It's fascinating that there are those here that don't know that.
