Calling Joss Experts ???

screw the joint pin back into place, obviously it was stuck at one time in the original shaft.

Possibly that's why an oddball replacement shaft came to be.

SCRUGGS, that's a Tim Scruggs.

Thanks for your posts. Nobody mentioned the shaft collar being a little larger. I did not notice it myself. That is worth noting, but nothing else about the shaft hinted at it not being either original to the cue or at least original to the same maker and period.

I have not heard of a 5/16-14 joint pin seizing in a brass insert before. I don't think a loose joint pin would have escaped me, but that is worth checking out if and when the cue is in my hands again. That would explain the pin projection being longer than the norm, but I don't think what you suggest was the cause.

I briefly considered it could be a Scruggs. I have seen pics of Scruggs with the larger radius brass insert that includes maple with the pilot (this seems to go away from the schon theory), but nothing else about the cue suggested Scruggs to me.

I'm not familiar enough with PFD cues to know why you would also say it is a PFD.

I just sold an Espiritu with a similar ringwork and long pin like this, curly maple plain jane with a linen wrap.

Thanks for your post. Yes, I agree on the similarities, but not quite identical. The insert on the far left is closest.

My cell phone pic doesn't adequately show that the insert on the left shaft is flattened at the end. That shaft was built to fit an Art Cantando cue, not specifically for the thinner Schick pin like mine. The left shaft fits the more standard 5/16x14 pins on my Joss, Showman, and Peppers cues.

The inserts for the shafts fitted to my Schick cue butt would definitely seize on my Joss, Showman, and Peppers cue butts. Those inserts are so tight to the Schick pin that they bite immediately when you attempt to screw in one of the other cue butts. The fit is so bad, only an idiot would attempt to see if he could force them any further.

I am sending a PM.

A normal 5/16" pin (your Joss, Showman, etc) would not screw into or get real tight and seize if it was screwed into an undersized insert for sure. I didn't consider this, I meant I had never heard of a problem occurring for properly sized equipment during normal use.

I did not check the insert of the shaft against a normal 5/16" pin. If the shaft insert is not undersize, then there could be a little more to the shaft story.

I have seen some that were normal 5/16 on the undersized screw. When I do the inserts, I bore .230.

Scruggs cues with the 5/16 X 14 pin did not extend the pin so far out of the butt.

All the best,
WW

Long joint screw makes me think it could be an It’s George. I have one with a noticeably long joint screw.

I have not yet seen a Joss with metal rings at the joint collars. I am not saying they don’t exist

Thanks for your post. I checked the weight bolt of my George. It isn't an exact match, but it is slotted and has some radial grooves on the face. I have been leaning toward the cue being an It's George. Yours having a longer joint screw strengthens that thought.

I emailed Bill pics and a description. I think he is going to get back with me tomorrow.
