I am thinking of buying Scruggs cue. An older one, early to mid eighties. And it comes with a Scruggs Jump cue butt. One shaft that has been sanded down to 12-12.5mm. 4 point, 4 veneers. ivory and MOP inlays in the butt. The cue was used as a break cue. It needs to be refinished and the ivory buttcap needs to be replaced. Thats my main issue. The money I have to put into restoring the cue verses the value. How much should I pay for this cue?

cue

Sounds like you can get it at a bargain. Who ever the owner is obviously doesnt care about the cue much to be using it as a break cue. Id take a shot at offering no more than $500.00. Cost of refinish could be close to a grand if you look to replace the butt cap w/ ivory (which I would'nt) build new shafts, re-wrap etc. Pics would be nice - sounds like a nice traditional player.

Good luck

Id say...

Id say you would be putting about 150-200 for just a refinish with a phenolic buttcap, or so if you wanted Ivory would be at least 100-250 more, another shaft or two to play with 125-250. I would like to get that butt for about 700, the shaft it comes with is useless.

A ivory ferrule Scruggs shaft will run you $220, figure in shipping, ask Nick Serdula for values on a Scruggs cue

Thanks for the replies... I am not quite sure if I want another ivory buttcap. Scruggs charges $450. Plus I have a bad habit of bouncing the ruber bumpers of my cues on the floor, as my apponent runs out on me. I would end up cracking it. I have to have the TS logo. Proficient billiards will refinish the cue for $80, clean the wrap for $30, and make another shaft for $200(w/ an iory ferule). Although for $225, Scruggs can make me one. A lot of numbers to think about.

If you want any work done on a Scruggs it is definitely best to send it back to Scruggs. I don't think he'll work on a cue after someone else has done repair work on it...

$$$$$$$$$$$

You may be looking at 1K. 2 shafts, buttcap and rewrap and refinish. Add that to your cost and just buy a new one.
If you already own the cue and need to contact Timi try TimScruggs.com or 410-247-1231.
Also if someone else has done anything to the cue you may really be opening a can of worms. Call first. That may be best.
Pricing is on the sight under repairs.
Nick :)

I bought the Scruggs today!!! The description I gave was from (bad) memory. There are 4 ivory diamonds seperated with 4 ivory dots. The butt is not ivory(thank GOD). I got 2 shafts that roll straight instead of one. 12.5mm and 12.75. There is a plastic coding over the buttcap, so the TS is in flawless condition. Too bad the rest of the buttcap is ruined. The money I have to put into this cue is far less then what I first thought.
