Capelle's Practicing Pool

Has anyone else gotten this book? Has it helped your game?
Hey BigJohn,
It’s been a minute, but I remember enjoying this book very much. I know I liked it enough to highlight certain things and write notes in the diagrams.

One thing that stuck with me was a shot where you are trying to adjust off the tangent line. You put a blocker a certain distance down the line and try to avoid in front or behind it; maybe place a cluster just off the line and work to really pinpoint the placement of the breakout.

You can work on variations off the shot and really get a feel for how fullness of hit, speed, and tip position come together. (Alright I grabbed my copy, p. 144 “The Bends.”)

Welcome to the board, shoot straight!

I used to be a pool book hound and I gotta say the information you get doing pool is better.

Well two books had good info. Mastering Pool G. Fels and the Willie Hoppe book.

Fels supplies details for formulating and playing sequences.

Hoppe's had the 3 rail pictures.

Found CPG here and Jimmy Reid's video. That stuff is missing in ALL books. Commercial ventures and not a lot of substance.

The mental stuff is for people who can't play enough to keep their mind intact.

Oh, yeah, Dr. Dave is the details bomb.

Yes I have that book. And I also have his "Play Your Best [insert game]" books. I prefer the play your best 8 ball and straight pool over this one.
I am not a fan of the chapters on Fundamentals, and Shotmaking & Aiming. Depending on your skill level the rest of the book may be useful. For me it was dissappointing given the quality of his other books. Also now days there are very good youtube channels that cover most of this stuff.

What is cpg?

All of Capelle's books are good. Certainly worth getting and reading through.

However, none of them are going to transform you into a great player. Only you can do that. But if you follow what he says and practice what he shows you it will certainly be a big help.

I went through his books and used little yellow stickies to mark shots/situations that I wanted to practice.

Hmmmm........I might just have to pull that "Capelle 9-Ball" book out again and read through it.

I’ll make this short but at one point I was an 8 ball player mostly for almost 20 years. I thought I didn‘t play good rotation because I just never played 9 ball. I was told by a pro player it’s because my position play is good enough to be a good 8 ball player but not for rotation. After a bit of playing all 9 ball I realized he was correct. A friend turned me on to one of his books that had the 16 critical shots of pool. They are shots that come up constantly in almost every game. I worked on each shot every day And it transformed my game. I’ve added many things since then like clock position and such but I still have the screen shots on my ipad I took of each picture from that and have told people in apa who want to get better this is a great place to start!!

Do you remember which book had the 16 Critical Shots?

IMO, the books in the attached photos contain a wealth of information. They were of enormous help improving my
overall level of play in all of the different pocket billiards games. Study and learn this material and it’s all you’ll need.
I have others but these are what I consider the best of the best, along with Ray Martin’s 99 Critical Shots (my 1st book).

The Pro Book by Bob Henning is a great book for shots. And he has 16 shots as well as banks, kicks and safeties.
I’ve been meaning to try and find a copy of that, nice to hear a recommendation.

If you have read any of Capelle’s books, how would you say the two compare?

I had all the Capelle books and now just have the spiral bound practicing pool book left. It’s good I like that he included structured practice routines as well. I keep it out at my local pool hall for any players to use. I used to like Bert Kinisters stuff alot. He had alot of his videos uploaded on YouTube but I think he took them down recently unfortunately.

The good news is that Niels Feijen was a student of his in the 90s, and has his own YouTube channel. He’s got in my opinion the best channel for pool instruction and practice drills. He still uses some of Kinisters drills too.

I have read a few of Capelle's books. Play Your Best Pool, Play Your Best Straight Pool, and Capelle's Practice Pool. I'm not the best person to do a book review. But anyway. Capelle's best pool book is one of my favorites. It was my second read after Byrnes and I got a lot out of it. Capelle has the very basics, plus intermediate stuft like shots making, aiming, english angles, position play, strategy etc. It covers a lot of territory. Good for beginner to intermediate imo.

The Pro Book has the mental game and competition stuff, but I use it for the shot practice. It is like getting drills from Bert Kinister. The 16 shots come from BKs Advanced 60 Minute Workout routine. This part is focused and more advanced than Capelle. If you don't want to look around this book is available on Amazon. Apparently there is an Advanced Pro Book. I know nothing about that one.
