May as well just use a 5% cobalt. Doesn't matter what you use you'll have to sharpen it.

Is that one used for cutting off or trimming the sides of tips?
Cutting off. Any suggestions on a carbide alternative for cutting/parting would be very much appreciated.
Thanks Dave, Any leads on one? I am sick of this style. they will barely scratch phenolic without burning and they dull so fast on any thing else it's a pain in the ass. I can sharpen my carbide tools. So I'd prefer carbide.

If you have a quick change tool post, I use these. Easy to sharpen.
Parting tools with carbide inserts look fundamentally different, they are usually in a separate holder 19mm / 3/4" height is usually the smallest size and the parting insert thickness is usually about 2mm
You can buy parting tool shank type tools as well, but they are often 1616 or 5/8" shank if you will and they have limited parting depth.
ThinBit specializes in thin parting tools and they might have a 1/4" shank tool. Check their website. I have inserts from them that's 42 thou thick. You need a very accurate setup, any sideways force and they will snap! Which sucks, they are $12 a pop.
I don't have the quick change, But I have been considering getting one.

It is a must for me. I change tools too often. That ThinBit looks interesting too.
For general cut off use I like one similar to these.
As suggested, you may want to invest in a quick switch system for holding your individual tools.
If I were using it often enough I would throw far more time and effort at it. But I have seen the parting tool I showed in the picture a couple times in the past that had the carbide tipped end. That's really all I need or want. Next time I see one I'll grab it and post pictures. I'm surprised they are so hard to find.

We stock a 1.5 mm .060 version. Beware though with a regular cue lathe without the lid kit or double riser you cannot get the tool far enough back to do much good.
