Carbon fiber: shaft vs. entire cue; extension?

Been playing in the APA fifteen years (5 handicap in both 8 and 9 ball). Have two somewhat basic pool cues: Action Impact; Griffin GR.

1- Should I just get a CF shaft and put it on the Action butt or get an all CF cue? Will it make a difference in how I shoot? I don't care much about what it'll look like and the Action butt has some sentimental value to me. A teammate told me once that almost all the cost is a cue's butt (ex: inlays) and the butt does not matter much. Not sure about that.

2- I'd like to have a 3" extension on my cue as I am fairly tall (full time extension; not just for reach). I have a Balance Rite mid-cue extension, but it makes my cue rather heavy. I noticed some players have an extension that screws into the cue's butt end that can be removed quickly if there is not enought room for the full extended cue. Cuetec has this.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Seamus

The problem with rear extensions is the the connection. You might have to move your hand back too far to make it workable--otherwise your hand will be on the connection. Maybe that won't bother you. I prefer a mid cue extension because it allows me to move my rear hand anywhere I want without the connection getting in the way.

I actually use a 4" mid cue extension along with an 8" rear extension. The back of my rear hand is usually 1-2 inches forward of the connection with the rear extension. If I removed the 4" mid cue extension, the rear extension connection would be smack in the middle of my hand. My rear extension also has a smaller diameter than the end of the butt, so there is a step down to the rear extension.

Have you seen this:

I have a 58" Mezz with a RickRoper-built 3" CF ext. I normally grip cue in the butt-sleeve but having that extra 3" comes in handy A LOT. As for a CF shaft i'd try a Rhino, at their price point they are a great product. I got the Rhino-train rolling here on AZ back in Nov. and a lot of members have bought one and really like them. I'm real happy with mine(12.8Wavy with a Wizard S tip). I went to a softer tip because shaft is pretty stiff and ball came of 'hot' with my usual tips.

Use your action butt and try the rhino shaft garczar recommended. That way if you don't like the carbon fiber you're only out a couple hundred bucks which you could recover selling the shaft.

If you are happy with your butt, there is no need to buy another. I do like carbon shafts, but I wouldn't say they are strictly necessary. I'm playing with my ViKore wood backup shaft until I get a new tip on my Siege CF shaft. It's a little different, but I can't honestly say it's not as good. I think the advantage of CF is the slick surface, and the durability and resistance to dings. Why would anyone put a ceiling fan in the same room as a pool table?

I would recommend a full carbon cue. GO Customs make them in desired length and weight, which means you can get a well balanced 19oz 61" cue without an additional extension.
