Carbon Fiber table cloth?

Guangzhou Billiard Expo just ended, and Xingpai星牌 Star released a new pool table with rails covered in carbon fiber. They calimed that makes the rails heat and impact resistant, and last very very long. This makes me wonder, why can't we have carbon fiber cloth for the playing surface? If this does work, then we virtually don't need to change table cloths ever... If not, why not? What are some of the problems that carbon fiber cloth has?

IMO, it would be like playing on a kitchen counter top with Formica plastic laminate. (I tried that when I was a kid!) Way too smooth. The spin would not grab and the balls would slide even when they are spinning. Being that smooth also means any level issues of the slate would be exaggerated.

Plus, due to the fibers, the material is also abrasive, which would wear the balls. So you have poor friction for spin, and ball wear.

You'd still need cloth for the rails, as the CF would not compress with the cushions.

Nice, they fixed a problem that doesn't exist. I have 60 year old rails that still work.

...snip...
By that logic we never would have had plastic laminate rails, or Dymondwood rails, or whatever the name brand is that Diamond uses now after the Dymondwood factory burned down. We'd still be playing on dinged up to hell solid wood rails.

I think the Dymondwood was the answer for rails, too bad the factory burned down. Dymondwood was very tough, I have never personally seen a dented rail on a Dymondwood table and it maintained the beauty of wood.

I suppose one could use just the cloth used in carbon fiber without the resin but its not smooth like pool table cloth, the balls would follow the mesh horribly. Once the resin is added carbon fiber mesh is no longer flexible, that would not work very well on cushions not to mention that the balls would probably need brakes so they stopped rolling someday. Lastly carbon fiber gets its strength from the pattern it is laid up in, a flat sheet would probably be the weakest form of carbon fiber.

I agree with @DeeDeeCues about fixing a problem that didn't exist. Causing another too maybe. Lots of people complain about loose fibers coming off their shafts, wonder if these shed.

To be honest it’s unnecessary for used as pool shafts. They are also dull shooters. I thought I was going to convert but I will pass.

The lure is that we are able to shoot with something other then wood.

Another thing is you cannot just slap on a CF shaft and be done with it. I see too many players put one on and say there is a learning curve. You’re learning how to play with an unbalanced cue.

So to fix it people think they can easily adjust the weight. It may be true but the weight is still going to be in the back. Unless your cue butt is cited all the way through. Let’s say 10-12” so you can actually balance it rather than counter-balancing.

I see one plus. Longer taper without noodling than wood.
