A high profile player has offered me a position to run a pool room that is currently a twinkle in their eye. I'm sorry I cannot be exact as to the location but the vicinity is Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. I/We would do research to get a business plan together. They would get the investors and promote the room. Together we would design the layout of the room and pick out the decor. I would then get everything else to get it up and running, from insurance to promotions to chalk to napkins. It will be a small room, with 12 -16 tables, small kitchen and bar.

I have been at this billiard club, in NYC for 16 years. Over that time I have built a great reputaion with the local community and during that time I have done most of it except literally managed the room from the back office or run the kitchen. As most of you would agree, it takes good skills with people and good organizational qualities as well to be a success.

My question to this forum is what do you think that position is worth. I know I cannot expect New York dollars but it would be great to hear your opinions. Thanks so much.

$6.00 per hour + tips

Base + percentage.

I would never get into another business without a percentage.

Its good for both parties, and encourages success.

Tres, the value of what you are capable of doing and what you can produce is directly proportional to the net profits that the business can sustain. You mentioned that you will come up with a business plan. This is key to the success of the business as well as your success. 12 - 16 tables seems a little on the low side but maybe things will balance out with the food and bar. It will depend on what and how you are promoting the business and which portion of the business will draw the dollars.

If I were you I would take a trip to the area of the proposed business and see how buiness is for other pool room owners in the area that have the same number of tables and serve food and have a bar. As you might suspect, this little trip will give you good insight as to what the area will support in the way of pool hall / bar. Take a very good look at the clientle, take notice to the parking lot. What they drive will tell you a lot about their disposable income. Check these places out during the daytime and go back for the evening trade to see how much business they do. Of course pool halls have their ups and downs depending on the seasons of the year among other factors. What is the makeup of the customers - retirees, college kids, some of each. Do the younger people bring a date on the week-ends, how much do they spend while there.

You have run a business for 16 years in NY, maybe you can approach the owner for a by-out and take over the business that you now run. This way you already know what to expect from this buiness.
