Carpet tack strips

A friend of mine decided to use carpet tack strips instead of staples to secure his cloth. Is this a good or bad idea, and why?

I am not a table mechanic, and will not advise your friend how to recover their table. I believe that this topic has been debated in this forum to some extent, and would suggest that you do a search (limited to this section). This should provide you with the differing points of view on this method.

It depends on what kind of table he has, there may not be room for them but most tables do have just enough. Not worth the effort unless the table will be covered frequently.

Thanks for the replies. The table is a GCIII, and it's gets covered once a year. I did some research here, and it was tough to sort through the b.s..

I'm going to attempt to put new cloth and rubber on my GCIII in the near future, and I was curious to any drawbacks. I figure the worst I can do is screw it up:eek:LOL.

the table will need a little modifying in the ball box area, Sides will be tight as the aprons taper in, careful you must be or the worst thing that could happen is that those carpet strips rip you open some where. Be careful that there are no young children around. Rubber gloves help also, Good Luck

Thanks. I'll probably just staple it. I can picture all too well trying to stretch the cloth, and putting my fingers into the tacks.
