Hello all.

I am wanting to go to the next level of my casemaking. I have been trying to find a resource for the internal "plastic tubing." However, I really dont know what I am looking for with all the terminology I keep running into online. My own research shows averages of 1.25 butt and .850 shaft. But I have measured variations up and down on both. I also want to pad the tubing inside. So I guess I have these questions...

o Is there a standard I should size for the butt and shaft sections? Is this proprietary information for each casemaker or is there an industry standard?

o Do you casemakers buy tubing from an external resource or do you make your own? I ask this because I have had the idea of making my own out of a lightweight fiberglass. However, Im sure it is cheaper to buy a bulk order of 2 different sized tubing then go through the material, time, and area required for making my own.

I have a hundred other questions but I appreciate your time in answering these for me.

The tubing I use is 40mm ID for the butt and 23mm ID for the shaft. Jack Justis says that water pipe from the hardware store fits the bill here. I think I still have the tubes left from an interior replacement I did to a Justis and if so I will tell you exactly what the pipe is.

o Is there a standard I should size for the butt and shaft sections? Is this proprietary information for each casemaker or is there an industry standard?

There is not any industry standard. However the water/sprinkler pipes mentioned above seem to be the right size for most cues.

o Do you casemakers buy tubing from an external resource or do you make your own? I ask this because I have had the idea of making my own out of a lightweight fiberglass. If it's individual tubes you are looking for then most case makers buy it off the shelf at the hardware store. Some factories have tubes made, like Instroke and Jiasen.

We make a lot of our cases using large extruded tubes with the compartments divided by foam rubber backed fabric. We have the shells made for this.

I am certain that you will be better off buying the tubes from Home Depot etc... rather than making your own out of fiberglass.

Some case makers buy their whole interior setup from other case makers. Justis buys his from a case making factory in China. I plan to start selling interiors shortly.

You can also buy el-cheapo cases and strip them for the interiors.

Some people buy older it's George or Fellini cases and use those interiors. We have recently see a gorgeous pair of cases done this way in the Gallery section.
