Casual in Nashville

I will be in Nashville TN over Christmas. If I decide to step out with my cue where should I go to play a friendly (low stakes, time or no stakes or I will even pick up the tab for the company) game of banks, 1-pocket or straight. Preferrably with some easy going old timers.

JOB's

best pool room I have been in (in that area)

But make sure you lock your car... LOL

DO NOT go to Buffalo Billiards downtown. I visited Nashville a little over a year ago and was stuck downtown with no car. I had looked on the web and found this place within walking distance of our hotel. It sucked! The place was wide open to the street outside, tables looked like they played like crap, and nothing but teenagers playing. Sorry I can't help you in your quest.

Amen to that. I was in JOB's last March. I stopped in that morning to do a little practice before the place got busier that night, was in there for 2 hours and come outside to find half the parking lots hub caps were stolen.. Asked JOB about it, and he just told us where we could go down the road to probably buy them back.. (my friend lost his) Lucky for me my car didn't have any to steal.. But it's a very nice pool room, very not nice neighborhood..

No doubt it's a bad area...

But what a great pool hall...
Last time I was there, they had 3 rooms of tables... Lower level with 9'
Left upper with Diamond Bar Tables and an action table up front...
Nice Bar etc... Great place to play...

Alex Brick is there as well...

I played a few times on the barboxes at Corner Bar, near the exit inn, the bartenders are cool (two of em are pretty cute too!)

I live in N'ville and have played at JOBs at least 100 times. I have not personally witnessed a single episode like the one's described although I have heard of a few (but not the hub cap incident).

It's an "OK" neighborhood...not a war zone ghetto. Normal security factors should be used...like parking near the front door...but LOTS of people are mugged or kidnapped from the more remote areas of large shopping mall parking lots too.

But for the games you seek, you will absoultely find them there. NICE people who will play as small or as large as you want...who have been going there for decades and ain't dead yet!

Tables...a bunch of diamond bar tables that have JUST been recovered with 860. Only ONE diamond 9 footer and several Kasson 9 footers that play OK but I don't like their pockets.

Non-smokers beware!

Regards,
Jim

oh, theyre a non-smoking bar?
i kinda like that. almost every room here in memphis has gone 21+ to accomodate smokers.
it was almost pointless for tennessee to pass the whole non-smoker protection act, when they have so many ways around it.
they should have called it a 'non-smoker stay home' act. :D

No sorry...they are NOT non-smoking...that is what I meant. It get's pretty thick in there when they are busy...BUT the "old timer" games you seek are in a separate section of the place...no door but separated by a wall and has mostly 9 foot Kassons that few like so it gets less people and less smoke!

yea, now reading that again, i see that i read it wrong.
for some reason i took it as 'smokers beware'.
ill still check it out when i get back up there :D

JOB's is a great place to play. Just left there a few minutes ago. Security guards patrol the parking lot---but always be careful when leaving a pool hall or bar. IM me if you want to play when you get to town.

Actually, try calling ahead a day or two before you want to play after 6:00pm and ask for Alex Brick. He is the cue tech/cue maker in residence there and exactly fits the description you are looking for.

NICE guy.

He'll play some with you and/or introduce you to the "regulars" who will.

Regards,
Jim

I was home in TN this past week. Went to JOBS on Tues night and had a good time. Played in their bar table weekly event (w/ a cuetec housecue....travis trotter would love that). Watched a ring game with the same guys who have been playing there since I was a kid. Kind of funny...saw a guy there who I remembered from Starcade Billiards from FL. Talked to Alex Brick a while and tested out one of his cues. All in all great equipment, good folks, and a good time.
