chalk on the shaft

i had noticed this discolored spot on my friends shaft while he was playing his league match. after he was done he pointed it out to me. this shaft collects chalk in an area about 3-4 inches behind the ferrule. when i look close i can see spots where it is clean, and after the 3"-4" the rest of the shaft is clean too.
what could be causing this?

thank you,
louis

It could be where he is holding his cue. Players stand waiting for their next shot holding the cue's shaft in the exact place you are describing. Hand sweat or condensations from a drink get on his hands and transfer to the shaft, causing the grain the raise.

he had it cleaned and a new tip put on at a tournament, not sure what method they use.
but that was what i was thinking too.
I have seen a few like this and from what I could find out at one time or another someone had put masking tape on the shaft when replacing tip or ferrule...once you do that that spot will never repel anything again especially chalk/sweat

X2...plus that is the are where chalk on your fingers will accumulate during the stroke. As above mentioned, the saft will be moisened and the chalk residue from your hands and also from chalking the tip, will stick to the shaft right there and during stroking, you will rub it into the wood grains...turning that spot more blue (if blue chalk is used) that the rest...although, the rest of the shaft is also recieving a coating of chalk residue...it's just not sticking and getting rubbed in as much. No was to stop it, I just clean with alcohol between uses.
