Chalk Preference

Jerry & Jason are correct. Master's Blue. I have 2 professional friends who prefer it above all others. I also have 2 friends with odd colored felt (one with light grey, one with tan). The crappy Silver Cup chalk they have is basically unuseable. We miscue with any moderate deviation from center ball. I basically do not play much at their homes because it is a totally different game - you just can't ever use any kind of moderate or radical English. While center ball skills are important, it is still nice to be able to draw the ball without miscueing every third shot.

I would love to know if anyone has tried Master's tan or grey chalk, is it any better than the ridiculous Silver Cup chalk? (if yes, I'll buy some for my friends).

I have played with the Master's tan chalk, and in my experience, it doesn't hold onto the tip nearly as well as the blue. I'm not sure why this is the case. It's unfortunate because the pool hall where I tried the tan, otherwise, had great tables and equipment; only tan chalk though since their tables were surfaced with tan cloth.

I've also tried the gray Master's, but I was such a novice player at the time that I didn't have the knowledge or skills to properly compare it to the blue.

the gray was ok, just below the blue IMO, The only reason i used it, was that the poolroom (closed now , but reopened by different people, it's ok, but not the best) had the nasty tan cloth, and if they caught you using the blue chalk, you got kicked out for a few days (except me ), so i used gray, it it worked out ok.

We have been using Master Green for 14 years. Blue sticks a little better but makes three times the mess. Green is fine if you consistently chalk your cue.

when i started playing, in 1968, the chalk was master in traditional blue, it goes a long way to leave a warm memory on you. today, i still prefer master in traditional blue. i tried silver cup, and although it goes on the tip with less effort than master, it also comes off the tip faster, resulting in many more miscues. in england the #1 chalk is triangle in traditional green.why this is? i'm not sure, i guess it works better on smaller tips?
