i think they should have more of those. just go to your local pool room and talk to the owner. ask him to put up 2or 3k for the winner 2 day event. race to 40
charge 10 a person . he should get most of that back or close and its good for pool. you can have two well known players in the state play or the best player play and call one of the pros to come on their way to a stop. do good advertising. even put it in the paper. there is no reason why this should not work. there will be a pool room somewhere in your city who will do this.or even 1500or1000, in 93 we did this in slc the owner put up 3000 winner take all i got buddy hall to come down and we played a race to 40 sat. and sun. had a pretty good turn out it was advertised for a month flyers to poolrooms city paper ect.
tell me your thoughts...........i know i left out the best part who won?
thats another thread

most of it is because the gut who owened the pool room had known me since i started playing the game and he used to be an exelent golf player on the 6/12 anyone who came through slc 23 years ago came up short with him on the life table. but after a couple of years of playing i learned the game and we might play 2 days for 20 a game and i would win 500 to a thousand every weekend. ive run out from the lag many times and six and five holes to many to remember. road players would come through and i would usually if not always take them off . if we played long enough. and if we swiched
to banks i always won. i think only one player after ive played 2 years beat me one pocked which i was still learnig, but i beat him in 9ball and banks. that player was ................... thats another post. everyone would know this player. i will one day soon give you guys the people i beat gambling and the people i lost to gambling and be honest about it. that should be fun:) but on to the original question. after i played about three years he was convinced that i could beat anyone in the world. playing 9ball . their were road players that would come through we play $100 a game some players i would beat out of 50 games in 6 hours not baed for a kid.some 20 but i dont think after 2 years of playing and especialy 3 years anyone came through and beat me playing 9ball.and there were a few that came through. so as time went on and in 93 i decided to play nothing but pool. he thought that buddy hall was the best 9 ball player in the world. cause my friend 20 years ago when i was 18 he was 40 something and knew many old timers. and had the bchance to see buddy play when he played really good. but for some reason thought i could play with him and win.
guess if you dont miss its hard to lose . so in 93 he wanted to see us play and was willing to pay 3000 to the winner . so i askes buddy if he was interested and he said if its on the way to a tourney we made a date that was conveinent and played........about nov. of 93

That is a very good idea. In fact if they play an all around it may be even better. Basically that is all a rodeo or a circus is. Same bunch of guys doing the same act in different cities. Half a dozen players could crisscross the country indefinitely doing their act in a different city every couple of weeks. It can't be done on the fly though there has to be a good solid business plan. It could also be combined with clinics and cue sales.

can we get a score and was this the only time you ever played Buddy outside of a tourney????????
if i say all ive done in one day it would ruin everything we need time to chew, savor, swallow, think, digest
:) plus if i say all i might as well leave cause ther would be no more to say:):)

i think a local pro or pro should go to pool rooms and ask tell them the details call a well known player, doest have to be a world beater . someone everyone knows like keith or me or any number of strong players out there. split the money if you want just get it done if you try i will bet it will happen

next week i will try it and ask and mabey get keith or someone down here
we shall see.

Hi Mark,

I don't know how long you've been watching this forum. I posted this a few months ago.

Our room manager tried your suggestion a year ago last spring. Santos Sambajon Jr. played Francisco Bustamante both one pocket and nine ball for a significant amount of cash. He tried to charge $30 per person to watch. The players came in early. Fooled around on a table with some locals, went to dinner with us, then put on a good show. Not great, good. A few people drove in from both Buffalo and Syracuse. Unfortunately, not enough of the locals were willing to support the event. If it weren't for a couple of locals helping to underwrite the event, the room would have taken a bath. Every time I've read of a room in a smaller city try your idea, it failed. Very few people, even those dedicated to the game, will pay hard cash to watch two players gamble. I loved the Derby City. There was action everywhere. Lots of spectators. I'd bet if a hat was passed, it would return empty!

I think it's a good idea to have more of them. But I like the idea of the money going to charity, like the make a wish foundation.

Charlie did that for two years at Planet 9-Ball. Two teams of five each. Matches like the Mosconi Cup for two days. Charged about $20. Got a good crowd but not over flowing. They put on a great show. The problem is people are reluctant to pay to watch when they know they can see good match ups for free.

Ever been to CM Lees?

Right now the trick shot artists are the only ones making money. They put on exhibitions for a fee. After the show they sell signed pictures, cue balls, videos, books, posters. A guaranteed pay check.

The local bar owner with 10 Olhausens hired Stephano Pellinga a couple weeks ago to put on a show. He was going to let people in for free and then decided to charge $5 each. He got about 55 people to attend. And the place really couldn't hold many more than that.

Don't know how much Stephano charged for the 2 hour show.

well i think if you put up to much money you have to charge to much and that will not work. you have to go slowly at first and mabey always but at least you keep the ball rolling. id say 2000 to 2500.3000 two days long races to give them there moneys worth. and to keep them their for awhile to spend a little money. they may lose a little money or break even. 10 to 15 dollars a person. but make sure it is a poolroom that does well they will be more willing to take a small loss. mabey even 1500 thats a pretty good wage for 2 days work for pool players. even if they split it.

Count me among the few that think these exhibitions are worth paying for, and I, myself, have helped to fund some local exhibitions over the years.

Nonetheless, the room owners nearly never get their money back when they sponsor exhibitions. The reason is because these events are not that special, and that's because the pro pool product is given away for free so often. For example:

1) in big cities, there are countless chances to watch top pros play for free.
2) every year at Derby City, you can watch the pros match up for free
3) during the US Open 9-ball event, you can watch top pros play for free

The men pros don't realize that all these giveaways devalue the pro pool product, and my best guess is that they never will, but roomowners know they don't have to pay real money to those who, so often, give the pro pool product away for free.
