I Recently saw a billboard fot the Women's Challenge of Champions to be held at Resorts Hotel/Casino in Atlantic City on 4/29. The Billboard had a picture of Jeanette & Lori John Jones on it. Does anyone know who else may be playing & what the format will be?

It's just you. This is one of the more entertaining events in pool. A single elimination, winner-take-all event completed quickly always provides high drama. It's not a format that could be used often, but as a once-a-year event, it's fine entertainment.

Still, the Women's Challenge of Champios has always been in the Autumn, making me wonder whether this is the Challenge of Champions or just a special exhibition of some sort.

i think the talent in the tournament is great. but the two race to 5 deal sucks.

it is possible for someone to win more total games and still lose the set(since its a one rack tie breaker if they split the set.)

its possible to win 5-0, then lose 4-5, then lose the tie breaker rack........so you actually outscored your oppenent 9-6.......but you lost

and as far as i know, the last i saw was the tournament of champions was still being held at the wolf's den at the mohegan sun.

the mens is the challenge of champions and the womens is the tournament of champions. the difference of couse being $25,000. the womens only has 4 players. say its a wpba tournament and somehow like the 57th player in the world got allison fisher one match and karen corr the next. she defeats them both. does she get 25 grand? no she needs so win 4 matches in a row to get into the finals for a chance to get $10,000. it just dosent seem right to me.

in lawn tennis, the similar scoring system is used. it's true one may win more games in total but it's the number of won sets that matter. i like tennis a lot and find icoc very entertaining. it seems the players know their objective and have their minds set based on that system. for me, it's ok to have some variation in scoring. i think how organizers select the participants is far more confusing, or maybe it's just me.

i'd agree with that.

one minute you have the austrian champion, the next year you have the PanAM champion..........then you have the finnish champion.

basically they just pick who they think will draw a good television audience, then at the tournament they announce which tournament they won last year was the biggest, and announce that as the reason they were invited.

you've rationalized their selection but maybe it's because they dub the winner as champion of champions so sometimes, i get surprised/disappointed with the line up as i think there are others more deserving to be in it.

in 9 ball there's no such thing as champion of champions......LOL

i have heard from several different sources, that the players just divide the 50 grand up anyway.

even the world championship, if played a day later, would probably have different resulst(not taking anything away from the world championship, its just the nature of 9 ball)

But they don't play an even number of sets. I think the whole deal is crap. Make it a race to 5, best of 3 sets or something like that.

the whole thing is stupid. use that prize money and make a tournament with maybe the top 16 players in the world and make them earn it. single elimination. rounds of 16 8 4 then the final.

Jeanette Lee takes on Loree Jon Jones in a world-class professional billiards showdown at Resorts Atlantic City, Friday, April 29

Resorts to also offer audience members a chance to play against both champions

Atlantic City, NJ - March 17, 2005 - "The Black Widow" meets the "Queen of the Hill" in a world-class billiards showdown! Resorts Atlantic City and the Sorvino Asthma Foundation announced that top ranked Jeanette Lee will take on WPBA Hall of Famer and eight-time world champion Loree Jon Jones in the "Challenge of Champions." This event will take place in Resorts' Superstar Theater, Friday, April 29. In addition to the competition, audience members will be randomly selected to play against both Lee and Jones.

Tickets are priced at $20 and are available online at www.ticketmaster.com or via phone at 1-800-736-1420. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., with a 9-ball match between Jeanette Lee and Loree Jon Jones scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. At 10:30 p.m., members of the audience will be randomly selected to play against Lee and Jones. The excitement continues with a random drawing for 10 pool sticks, followed by Jeanette Lee and Loree Jon Jones competing in a Trick Shot exhibition.

Since turning pro in 1993, Jeanette Lee has established herself as one of the world's top-ranked pool players as well as one of the sport's most recognized personalities. Jeanette Lee earned the moniker "The Black Widow" because she wears only black during tournaments and then proceeds to devour her opponents. In 1998, she was named the WPBA Sportsperson of the Year, after twice being nominated for the award (1995 and 1997). In 1994, she was recognized by both Billiards Digest and Billiard Magazine as the WPA Player of the Year. Lee is also a model, an actress, a motivational speaker, and an author of The Black Widow's Guide to Killer Pool.

WPBA Hall of Famer Loree Jon Jones is known on the professional tour as "The Queen of the Hill" for her come-from-behind wins, her rare defeats when the score is tied, and securing victory in only one game. Jones holds eight world titles, three US Open Championships, three National Championships and she is a prestigious five-time Player of the Year. Loree learned her pool skills at the age of four, and, at the age of seven, gave her first exhibition to a crowd of more than 1,000 spectators. Loree Jon won her first championship at the age of 15. This win is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest world title holder.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Sorvino Asthma Foundation. Founded in 1993 by Paul Sorvino as a Not-for-Profit organization, the Foundation's goal is to build asthma centers for children and adults across the United States. For more information on the Sorvino Asthma Foundation, visit www.sorvinoasthmafound.org

It just doesn't seem possible to me. WPBA events are seeded for the Top 16 ranked players. A player drawing Fisher or Corr and beating them in the first round gets the draw of the player they beat. That means that, if they keep winning, they will not draw any other player ranked in the top 8 until the winner's bracket semis, by which time a fifth place finish would be assured. A tough draw turns into a great draw if you knock off the high ranked player.

i see. i didnt know that. but you know what i mean right? 2 matches dosent deserve 25 grand.

Three statements made in the press release:

1) Since turning pro in 1993, Jeanette Lee has established herself as one of the world's top-ranked pool players as well as one of the sport's most recognized personalities.

2) Jeanette Lee earned the moniker "The Black Widow" because she wears only black during tournaments.

3) WPBA Hall of Famer Loree Jon Jones is known on the professional tour as "The Queen of the Hill"

These three statements in the press release are, in my opinion, hard to fathom.

First, Jeanette is BY FAR the sport's most recognizable personality of the last twenty five years, and quite posssibly the game's most recognizable personality ever.

Second, Jeanette is not called the Black Widow because she wears black, it dates to her image of being a lethal spider catching players in her web when she was up and coming.

Finally, I watched LJ Jones compete for the full length of her WPBA career, and nort even once do I recall her being introduced as or referred to as "Queen of the Hill."

Of course, having said all this, I sure wish I were going. I'm sure the ladies will put on a great show.

you are mistaken. loree jon as been known as queen of the hill for quite a few years now.

i think she picked up that name well after her prime years.

i have heard vivian refer to her as the "combo queen", and i'd have to agree, i haven't see her miss a combo any of the times i've seen her play.

Yep-loree has been Queen of the Hill for a while now. The newest one to me is Tiffany Nelson- now being introduced as "The Rock"

her prime was quite a few years ago. i saw her play about 9 years ago and they introduced her as queen of the hill.
