Champion Billiards, Frederick, Maryland

All I've heard lately, is that it's closed indefinitely. Came as a surprise. They had planned to relocate down the street a bit, but that's all the word I've gotten.

Too bad if the case, nice comfortable room, night leagues, and now and then a pretty major nine or ten ball tournament.

Anybody know what's going to happen?

Man....this is sad to hear. Champions was a great room in Maryland. One of the last few with full 9ft tables. The band always attracted large crowds on Saturday nights. I wonder what happened? Guessing it just fell victim to the same burdens other pool halls went into. I moved from Maryland to Massachusetts a year ago and if you thought the pool scene was bad in Maryland there's only like 2 rooms here in the state.

When I started playing in the mid-1960's, there were a good 40 to 50 pool rooms inside the Washington Beltway, with 15 or 20 in DC itself, and all with full sized tables. With Champions in Frederick closing and 7 Billiards in Gaithersburg apparently converting to 7-ft toy tables, I wonder how many real pool rooms are left? The only ones I can think of are a few in Northern Virginia (First Break, Fast Eddie's), but not all of those are even inside the Beltway.

In fact, NONE of those are inside the beltway.

Theres a places in Annandale which are inside but are hardly pool rooms.

I recall when I arrived in the DMV area in 1995, they were all over the place now I believe that was the last one that was open.

FYI, they are auctioning off 2 Brunswick GC3 tables in the online auction closing on Thursday 27 July. Auction being run by Capital Online Auctions.
No shipping available. A few pool lights, some spectator chairs, lots of misc. pictures and bar equipment as well.

End of big name in DC pool. I can recall at least 6 locations around DC.

Best of luck to the Allen family, wherever it may go next.

QBall 1 in PG is barely inside the beltway, but it's a good old school room. In the city proper, Bedrock and Atomic are small but have big tables. Continental in Rosslyn has mostly eight footers but one big table. It's not what it once was. Streetlight and Center Pocket out 50 seem to be the new centers of gravity.

I'll be in the basement!

That's interesting. They have 8 Gold Crown Tables, and 4 Gabiel tables, all of these are nine footers. They also have four smaller Gabriels. They're only auctioning two Gold Crowns? I've seen on some other sites that they do intend to relocate, but I don't know for sure. Any updates appreciated.

Yes, I saw that they were going to move to a place on Holiday drive in Frederick, but I have no personal knowledge of anything. The FB page just said wait and see our "new and improved room."
