Change butt pin 3/8-10 to 5/16-18

I'm just asking IF it's possible and not sacrifice butt strength. I have but ONE SHOT at this and dun-wanna make firewood.

Butt has the McDermott 3/8-10 SS pin. I'd like to change to a 5/16-18 pin.
OR... is it possible to install an insert then thread a stainless pin? I know I'm adding weight, that's not the issue, I have SEVERAL extra shafts.

McDermott pins are sometimes a real pain in the butt to remove, the glue they use does not break down quickly or easily. Heating it multiple times is usually necessary. Once the pin is out, you can bore and plug the hole, then install the 5/16ths pin as usual.

Thanks, I heard they were a bear.
How about a stepped stud? Simple remove & replace.

I know but I have a good stock of 5/16 18 shafts.
In fact, all my sticks are.

Looks like that's what I'll be doing.
The 3/8-10 isn't popular in extensions & adapters, must be propitiatory(?)

I have played with a few cues with mid extensions and simply due to the length I would never consider one, it's way too cumbersome for me and changes everything. The first time I did it I shot one ball and handed back and said no thanks.

Your mileage may vary.
 
I'm pretty sure he wants to change the butt pin and not the shaft pin?

I don't care for mid extensions but they are a better option than changing a pin in my opinion. You could also just buy a shaft you like for that butt or have someone change the taper on the shaft you already have? Changing the pin isn't a cheap job.
 
Yes, change the butt pin. I have dozen+ shafts of 5/16-18 and ZERO 3/8-10.

Burnett post #6, I looked for over an hour and found just 2 examples of thread changing adapters.
For their price :oops:, I be better off just PLUG & RE-TAP.

Shame a 'Stepped Stud' wasn't available, it be a simple REMOVE & REPLACE.

Contact one of the cue suppliers who have those pins made, I'm sure a one off could be done.

Personally, I would pull the pin, plug it, and re-tap. I would be afraid the shoulder created going from 3/8" to 5/16" would create a weak spot in the pin. I doubt anything would come of it but it would always be in the back of my mind.
