I would like to lighten up a cue I have the weight bolt can come out but the problem is it was glued in with the yellow wood glue I sure don't want to damage the cue what can I do to soften up the glue so it can be removed in a safe manner. I have heated up weight bolts with the epoxy glue and with some luck it worked. Just not sure about the wood glue.
Will appreciate some tech support on this. Thanks, john

advice on weight bolt

I am sure someone has run into this before. Want to remove weight bolt
that has been glued in with yellow wood glue. Are there a good way or a way at all. I have heated bolts with the two part glue but i'm not so sure about the wood glue. Yes I do know you stand a chance of doing damage to the cue. What can I try? thanks, john

I would recommend using a soldering iron. Put a a pointed bit on the iron and touch it to the center of the weight bolt, it may take a little while but it will melt the glue in time so that the bolt can be removed.

Just take your time and do not over heat it, if you do it correctly you should not feel any heat coming through the material to the surface of the butt cap area.

If you are not comfortable doing this take the cue to a cue maker or repairman and let them do it, however, most will do what i have explained above.

Thanks for your advice

Yes that was the way I was thinking. Cue has a push in rubber bumper but the bolt has a center hole for the screw on bumper. The other way to heat
bolt is use a drill, drill in the hole go down about the length of screw hole
and then put drill in reverse and run on hi speed. When you start to smell
glue then check to see if you can turn bolt. as you said be sure as not to over heat. When you smell glue butt of cue will be getting hot. I may not even try it. It is not a high end cue but it is a good looking cue and plays
great I may change my mind and leave it as is, about an 18.75 I would like to make it 18 even. When you start heating up glue the heat will target
on all the glue that is used in cue construction. Thanks for your input
Take care, john

John -- try this, if you haven't already.

Put the screwdriver or hex wrench -- whatever fits in the weight bolt properly -- in a vise facing straight up (or straight sideways). Then take the butt of the cue and lower the weight bolt down onto the driver or wrench. With both hands on the butt tightly, see if you can turn it at all.

I've been able to get a weight bolt or two (even glued) out this way that I could not move when just using a screwdriver or Allen wrench in one hand and the butt in the other hand.

Worked out fine

Thanks for all the replys it came out easyer than I thought. I used a drill
with about a 3/16 bit drilled in the center where bumper screw would go
went down 1/2 inch or so then checked to see if it heated up enough used a 5/16 allen wrench and came out perfect. I heated just right to melt wood glue, Butt of cue never even got warm, and that was what i wanted.
Some times these things don't come out this good, with a happy ending.
just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the input on this. take care, john
