Changes I am not thrilled with

Update

Seems fate has played a role in this saga. All 5 of the Mo 8 Ball teams that had expressed interest in playing in our in-house 8 ball league have since dropped out. Everything from not having alcohol (which we just started in 1964, so it caught some by surprise) to Wednesday being "Church" day. Who woulda thought? Instead we are going to try something different. Perhaps a One Pocket League, Weekly 8 ball tournys vs Monthly 10 Ball tourny. Maybe mix it all up. Guess my father's spirit jumped in to steer us in a different direction. Time will tell.

They still think they play better when they drink, its not about the pool its about the night out. Unbelivable.

Good luck with the other plans

Update.

These are changes I AM thrilled with.
Instead of Mo 8 Ball leagues we are going to start having monthly tournaments again.

I am glad about this.
We will start by having a 8 Ball Tourny on October 1st, on 9ft tables.
Handicapped, Double elimination( I think).

Going to add more tournys each month as we work out the kinks.

Most likely a 10 ball tourny or One Pocket tourny once a month too.

With the decline of business we are now considering adding more 7 foot tables and taking out the 9 foot tables. This in order to put in league play.

Guess we have finally come to that point for our place. We prided ourselves on being a pool room with mostly 9 foot tables. Guess we are in the dinosaur age with our line of thinking. Everyone wants to play 8 ball on a bar box.

Not sure how I feel about this yet....only time will tell. :frown:

Why would you have to remove the 9's and install 7's for league play?

I play on 9's at AC Billiards just outside of Atlantic City, NJ. ( NO BEER )
I play on 9's at Sharkey's in Sebastian, Florida. ( BEER )
I play on 9's at Cunningham's in Vero Beach, Florida. ( BEER )

All of the above are league play. I don't think 9' table sould be a negative factor. If anything I feel they should be a plus. IMHO.

Hey Eric, how about just having a big added tournament?I think if you did an added 25K-50K added tournament once a year in Vegas or wherever you would be the toast of the town for sure.Players would come out and have a blast, maybe make the entry non existant or stupidly cheap and get some of the money back from sponsors, not much money back I am sure but you never know. Its a good start and I know your love for the game is there, just got to reach in your pocket. ;)

Adding $$$ is great for existing players and sorely needed, however added $$$ will not bring alot of NEW players into the game, it might inspire a few new guys to play, but it will not do what a movie was able to do. Right now because there are video games, and other games that offer instant gratification and more things to do getting people to become interested in pool is gonna be tough.

I have 2 friends staying here with me at the moment, one grew up with a snooker table and he is a D+ player but comes with some great shots, the other guy is 20 and the other night was the first time in his life he EVER player-20 years old and never hit a ball??? That was impossible a few years ago, absolutely 100% impossible to be 20 years old and never played pool once, and he didnt grow up living a sheltered life at all, he is well educated, travelled professional photographer, this kid has his shit together and has never hit a ball. WOW where is pool going??? There just isnt the interest, parents arnt like Jerry Benke who taught all his kids how to play, pool isnt being passed down. its getting passed off.

pool is dieing, what are you doing about it?

Because if people are used to playing on 7 foot tables in every other place they want the same thing at our room. Throws your game off too much to be on 7 fts with backed Mali cloth at one place and 9 foots with Simonis at the next place. Point is moot now since we are going to small tournys instead.

Craig;

I play at Hard Times in Sacramento. Recently our local TD, an AZer also, started what he calls a line tournament. Its 8 ball now, but was also 9 ball. Its an interesting concept. Its weekly and we had 49 players Tuesday night. Most were the bar players, and few better than a B player. Hard Times is all 9 footers, except maybe one.

Everyone plays from 7:30 to 10:00, rotating in a win/lose fashion. Great concept and brought in many league players. They also drink plenty of beer, but there has never been a problem. PM me if your interested in details.

Good luck to you also Highrun.

I have 14/16 filled as of now. Happy that they are all prepaid too.

Nothing worse than no-shows the day of a tourny. Now if they are no shows I dont care because the payout is the same. Supposed to have one more tonight. Should be filled by the end of this weekend way ahead of schedule. Might even start filling up for our November tourny early. We will see.

Just wanted to update and finish this thread. Our first tournament was quite a success.

Local favorite Julia Gabriel won our 8 Ball tournament tonight.
Second place was Ed Enders
Third and Fourth places went to Edik Grushevski and Chuck Buban.

Congrats to the winners and thank you for everyone that entered or just dropped by to watch. Great time was had by all.

EDIT>>>We just opened up our 9 Ball tournament sign up sheet tonight at 8pm. As of midnight we already had 12 entries all of them prepaid. Guess we ran this tournament right to have that much enthusiasm.
