changing butt cap

#1 - Ask this in the "Ask The Cuemaker" section.
#2 - If you want to send it to the maker, by all means ask him about it.
If it really is a high end maker's cue, removing an ivory butt is cutting a big chunk of money off. You should ask about if the maker considers it worth the cost to do, and if he thinks it will degrade the value. If the maker is hesitant, think twice. It's your cue in the end, but the maker may refuse to do the work if he feels it doesn't represent him & his work ethic well.

If it were me...I wouldn't do it. The cue is made the way that cue was meant to be made. I have heard of many people changing a butt cap to ivory...but never from ivory...that's just plain crazy talk!!
Listen....you have just given yourself a terrific excuse for saving your pennies for your next cue...a bumperless butt Hoppe ring cue. Go it even better...find a maker with, or get your own and pick a maker, with a nice one piece Titlist cue, and have it restored or converted. Man, there really isn't anything sweeter for the common man (or woman) than a nice Titlist cue. I know I am still hoping for one some day...LoL.
The money you would likely spend in the changing of the butt cap...plus throw in the devaluation of the cue any where from $250-$400 by removing the ivory butt cap...and you would be well on your way to a cue that was built to have a Hoppe backend outta the gate. Just sayin'...

I agree with what others have said. Leave the cue as-is. If you want a bumperless cue, get a nice hoppe that is arleady bumperless. There are a few available in the for sale section. The Andy Gilbert is really nice: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=165847
