The Charlotte Metro APA cities has kicked off this week and was wondering who in the AZ group was going to be attending? Since I'm new to the group I would like to meet some local AZer's and we could put some faces to the handles. Good luck to all!!

I'll be there tonight to try to qualify for the Capt/Co-Capt tournament on Sunday (and hopefully be there Sunday as well). I'll also be out at Corner Pocket in Albemarle next weekend for singles regionals.

How did you do in the qualifer. Im going to be up there Thurs. and Fri at least. Last session was my first in a leauge and Im stoked about the cities. My team says that the tourny is very well ran and 80 daimond tables, WOW. Hope to be there on Sun.

I have a student I will be working with all weekend, but if I get a chance Friday, I may stop in just to see who is out there.
If you see a guy with a logo on his shirt that says S&S Billiard Academy, that's me.

Steve

Im curious the winner of this city cup will have to wait til next August to go to Vegas?

Correct. In Charlotte they have the City championship 3 times a year. Each one they qualify 3 8-ball and 1 9-ball team to go to Vegas in August. They also have a 2nd chance cities in the spring which they qualify another 8-ball and another 9-ball team out of all the teams that made it to Sunday morning in the previous 3 cities. So they send a total of 10 8-ball and 4 9-ball teams every year to Vegas in August.

Didn't qualify for the capt/co-capt tournament. The two brackets I entered were very top heavy with 6's and 7's. I won my first round in each one but got taken out in the 2nd round of each. I played well, which is all that matters :)

As long as you feel good about how you played is the main thing. Better luck at the regionals. And Steve I'll get my eyes peeled for you on Fri.

So out of all the people on the forum only two players going to the cities. I have a hard time believing that since pool is very popular in Charlotte. Maybe AZ is just a well kept secret in the area.

I know of other's who will be there...

You can stop by Tim's Cue's in the back and say hi to Tim Hewitt. He'll have a setup there selling cues and gadgets and he's an AZB member.

I also know of some AZB lurkers who will be there as well... But since they are lurkers for a reason I won't name them :)

The rest of us are just on crappy teams that didn't make it to cities... We spend more time drinking than worrying about winning :)

The problem......

The problem is that APA players do not even really know that AZ exists. Most haven't a clue as to the existance of the pool world outside of APA. It is truly a shame that more league players are not in touch with who are pros are other than the ones that get "sponsored" by leagues. We are fortunate to have Kelly Fisher as a player rep in Charlotte, however it saddens me that outside of that the men are totally unknown as well as other female pros.

League play exists in a world of its own, where players play for the social aspects in a competitive enviroment as a team. Many will not enter tournaments or ever venture outside of league night to play or practice. Please do not take this post in any way as a bashing of league play, for without it many poolrooms and bars would be closed. These are the people who play soully for the love of the game and they are very important for the survival of pool.

Some of these same players in Charlotte ask me (Eddie Little) why I don't go pro. They have no idea that there are players much greater than myself and the fact of how much pros struggle to make a living playing the game they love.

I do however feel that in some ways league play does not put enough emphasis in supporting pool by challenging people to get better. Sandbagging has a big role in some leagues and often captains guide their players to lay down to keep the team together and increase chances of winning. If leagues would promote people to get better there would be an increase in sales of pool merchandise (cues, cases, books, DVDs, etc.) regional and pro events would get more spectators, and room owners would have more customers practicing at local rooms.

When we can find a way to connect pro pool with amateur pool we will have made a giant step towards getting pool more and more unified and hopefully one day it will share the same respect that golf has garnished and it's professionals will get paid for their talent and ability.

Congrats to NCSLIM1 for venturing outside of league play to AZ and the forums!!! I will be at Metrolina Thursday and Friday and if you ask around a lot of people there will know me.

Well said...I agree 100 percent because for about the first 3 years I was playing pool I thought the best players played in the apa and weren't but maybe a ball or two behind the pro's...I thought this because all the people I played league with thought that a 7 could hold his own against any regional(semi-pro) player.....WRONG

Oh, I can tell I'm going to like reading your posts already! You sir, have managed to talk like a trucker in the original post, and a surfer on the next. That is a high degree of difficulty you pulled off, and can't wait for future posts to see what new mixes you come up with!

In no way am I making fun of you. I just thought it was awesome how my first impression of what type of person you were as a new poster, became decimated by the impression of the second.

Anyways, that's not what I originally wanted to say. I was just expressing a thought that made me smile. What I wanted to say is good luck in the tournament!

Well I guess the old saying holds true that you cant judge a book by its words (hold on, that doesn't sound right) I think that I will just consider myself "well rounded".

Anyways we played our first match last night and pulled out a win. To be completly honest, I was quite intimidated. My captain put me up for the first match and my nerves rattled me a bit, but I settled down as the match went on. We will be back at 10 on Sat so I hope I left all the first match jitters on the table last night. It was certinaly a learning experience. IMO the tourny deserves all the hype that I had been led to believe, very organized and a great turnout. It shows that pool has big following in our area to be able to put something like that together 3 times a year. It also has a ton of great players that I hope to continue to learn from and grow in the game through. Good luck to everyone!!

I was speaking to a ref last night who was saying something very similar. He said that the concentration of great poolplayers in the area was very high and most of which are unknown outside of their small circles. He went as far as saying that there are players in the area right now that are better than any pro that has ever come out of or resides in NC. I felt that was a bold statement considering that such greats as Kelly and Allison Fisher and Earl "The Pearl" live here just to name a few. He may be correct but I dont know.

I agree that from the short time that I have been a part of a league it is apparent that some peoples idea of what league is all about is different than what mine is. I joined to try to better my game and to learn; not to see how many buckets of beer me and my buddy can go through. I consider myself very lucky to have just fallen into a team that is very knowledgable, respected, and competative. Everyone is great and NO ONE believes in sandbagging, which i respect. But I think that we may be the minority.

Anyway, I am having a good time mostly because of my teams attitude. And hey, we made it to the cities on my first session so I cant complain.:)

Just because he's an APA ref does't mean much :)

While there are some seriously good players in Charlotte I wouldn't go that far in my statements. Now if you watch them when they are "on" you might get that impression, but when you hang around the pool halls they are at long enough you see them on their off nights and realize that they are in fact human. I would go so far as to say there are a number of shortstops in the Charlotte area that when they are "on" could match up even against some of the best pro's when the pro is playing "average", but when the pro's are "on" they'll still win.
