Hi,

I am in Dothan, Alabama tonight looking for cheap 1 pocket action. How cheap? $10-$30 a game for a couple hours. No questions, no barking, no woofing. If I am outclassed then the other guy can pick up a couple hundred and I'll shake his hand and see him down the road.

Any help on where or whom I can play?

John

Herman's (technically, Herman and Ann's, downtown....you can play for whatever you want, that is Scotty Townsend's hang-out) or Pockets on Hwy 431. Herman's is the real "pool hall"...sort of reminds you of the movie "The Hustler". Believe me, there will be no problem finding a game for the stakes you want to play for.

I believe you will find all kinds of action. ONe pocket, snooker, you call it.

Hermans is the place to go. If you go tell Mr. Herman that
Frank Howe said hello. Its a good old fashioned pool room.
PLenty of levels of players as well.

Not far from there is Pockets. Less action but a nice pool room.

Please update on here if you dont mind. I used to live there and at
one time it was a great place for action. I think it has slowed some since those days but it seems pool gambling in general has slowed.

You will find very good equipment at both places but Hermans is old school
and there are no frills there. Pockets is a nice place and has good food as well as good pool.
Actually a guy that used to work there is a regular on here. He is no longer in Dothan however. "Sizl" and myself have spent a many a night around Dothan playing.

Have fun

Thank you. I went to Herman's and played some one pocket. I won a buck so it paid for the room rent and breakfast. I beat a kid named Denny and a guy my age named Stoney. The kid plays good, moves alright for someone his age but needs to work on his banking. Stoney played better but it was obvious to me that he was either having a bad night or his better playing days are behind him.

My one pocket game has definitely jumped a ball or two in the last month. I am seeing patterns and traps like I haven't ever done before. Somewhere along the line I aquired some patience and finally the lessons I have paid dearly for are sinking in. I am starting to feel like I actually get it now. Now, if I can learn to bank I might become a contender.

Y'all have a good one. Thanks for the information. Herman's is the kind of place I WISH I had around us. Good equipment, an ongoing ring game on the snooker table and FLEXIBLE hours according to the ACTION. They also had Coke in thoe little glass bottles. Made me feel like I was in the 50's. Except for the girl in overalls with a shiny black leather outfit over it. That was weird. Kind of Elvira meets Daisy Duke.

Night.

Glad you found some action. Not real sure who Denny is but I know a Stoney
but I did not think he was your age. Maybe I have your age wrong, I apologize if so but the Stoney I know would be about 27ish.

Glad to hear things have not changed. When I first started playing in Hermans regularly the bar tables were $.25 a game and the 9 footers
were $1.50. This was around 87-88. In 2003 before I moved to California
the bar tables were .50 and the 9 footers were 2.25. Great prices

I have alot of very good pool memories there. I have watched and listen to Junior Goff there for hours on end. He still has one of the nicest strokes that
I have ever seen. Many ring games have been played on the snooker tables or partner games.
Almost every good player or great player that has was around from 88-2000
I watched play in Hermans. All that were willing got action in some way or another.
Many good stories out of there.
John if you will picture the place............... what I miss was in the seats
lining the wall by the snooker tables. In those seats sat alot of old timers sweating action and whispering words of wisdom. Some quit or moved but far to many have left us. I know there are pool rooms like Hermans but none of those were "my room" and everyone has "their room".

Not one other place have I seen a guy call his wife to bring more money to gamble and her show up with a shoebox of hundreds. I saw it there and watched him dumped the money out in front of everyone and tell the
road guy that "now they could gamble".
I was lucky to have started at a good time and to have had the likes of Archer be a regular there for a while. There always seemed to be a road player there and stay for a little while.

If you get a chance stop by there again. I doubt anything will be different.

John,

Glad you had an opportunity to visit Herman's. It is a great place to play. I always loved how the old timers sit by the front door playing dominoes. When a stranger walks in, they are almost always asked "You lookin for a game?". Next is "how much you want to play for?".....that determines who gets up. If your stakes are too high for them, a phone call is made and the game is on.

Stoney is a real decent player....he can play a little better when the stakes go up. I don't know Denny, but I am sure he is getting a lot of experience there.

Denny??

John,

Was Denny about 18 or so and tall. with a real southern type drawl. If so, and you see him or Stoney again, tell him Justin in Florida is still waiting!!

If you are going west, try Starcade Billiards in Fort Walton Beach, Florida,,,,,,,,,,,,we got a couple of one hole players

YEs, that was him. HE mentioned something about going to Ft. Walton/Starcade.

And BillFishHead - Ft. Walton Beach still owes me $1800 cuz that's what I got stiffed for last time I played there many years ago. BUT - I love Starcade and any time I am around there I'll stop in. ANYONE on the planet Earth can played for $10-30 a game with me in one hole. The worst I can do is get a couple hundred dollar lesson that will only make me money down the road.

I will play my best game for $10. Same game I play for $300. It's either hot or cold. My best and only hustle is to just try my hardest to win. I miss so many easy shots that blind girl scouts want to bet their cookie money. But once I settle in I can hit 'em alright.

Thanks again for the tip on the poolroom. It's always nice to make a score - even a small one but it would have been worth the trip just to experience the place.

I played a couple games of pea pool at the end. My table time was .40cts. You didn't need to tell anyone you were switching tables. They had an older gentleman watching and writing down when anyone started on any pool table. Play on four tables - no problem - he's got it all written down. Loved it!!!
