Cheap Break Solution

A friend of mine got a knock off Sledgehammer with a phenolic ferrule/tip combo on it. I fell in love with it from the first shot. So, Murphy's law comes into play here, he has no idea what the brand of cue is other than a "Sledgehammer knock off that he traded some guy for". I did some searching on the net and ebay and came to the realization that I'm cheap and I just don't want to spend the money on a genuine Sledgehammer. So I looked at the knockoffs and found some called a "Hammer Head" on ebay that seemed fairly affordable as well as some Fury break cues that had phenolic ferrule/tip combos. So those two are options. I'm also considering just putting a phenolic ferrule/tip on an old Lucasi that I have laying around. Obviously, that would be the cheapest solution. I'm just wondering what others think. Would it be worth the extra money to get an actual break cue or should the ferrule/tip hold me over enough?

get the fury !!

I just got a Fury from the One pocket Chump ( sorry John had to do that ) And I would highly recommend it! Can't go wrong for the $$$ spent

It's what works for you; I have a sneaky-pete that I put a phenolic ferrule/tip on it that I would not trade for any other break cue.

J/B Cues...

I have a Stinger and love it, but if $$$ is an issue, it's Fury hands down.

If I could just ask what is the difference between a phenolic tip and a normal tip and how does the phenolic tip help or improve your break as I thought all tips were the same, as I say I am just curious.

Wouldn't it be nice ...

if they could be a 'breaking machine' that could break
from different spots and speeds, so all of the
break sticks could be compared apples to apples.

I seriously doubt whether 'any' tip is so much better
for breaking above a hard leather tip. Too many
other mechanics and things involved.

All of the newer ones make all kinds of claims, but
in reality, they are small minute improvements,
not 30-40% as many claim. Indications are that
if you buy their cue, you will break like a champion,
and that is simply not true.

the reasoning is that since the tip is harder than a normal tip, it transfers the energy more efficiently - and thus equals more speed with less stroke. more speed with less stroke equals more control. my opinion from practical application is that it doesn't. I used to have a phenolic breaker (it shattered) and it didn't break any harder than my playing cue.

The phenolic tip will not compress, like a leather tip will, so the phenolic tip is obviously harder. So what, the control with a phenolic tip is questionable at best.

If a player wants to use a phenolic, please let them. A couple of ill-timed miscued Break Shots & their break shot is history, at least for the time being.

I have a Predator BK & a BreakRAK Break Cue, both have a hard leather tip. Works for me ... Good Luck to all.

Fury J/B's are the way to go if you can get your hands on one. I know the factory was sold out for a while. I tried one for a second time in vegas, and i could hammer the balls. I'm thinking of ordering one to use until Doug has time to make a few adjustments to my Foster j/b.
