After the break I was left with a tough kick for a safety. I played offensively and shot a risky, but rewarding, shot. I kicked at the one with plenty of smooth follow, such that it wouldn't take until after hitting the one, nearly full in the face, favoring the far side, so that the follow would take the white to the five. I told my opponent what I was about to do, partly for fear of his disbelief, partly because I'm a show-off. ;)

Just thought you'd appreciate the ingenuity. I adapted this shot from a recognized 3c technique, where it is much easier to get this action with bigger balls on a fast table.

(And, I'm not sure exactly how to post the image into the thread. Help?)

Here's another fun shot that got me out in a game of 8 on a barbox in a tournament. He played safe where my only good hit was on the one ball and I couldn't make it. Plus, he was safe from the out b/c two of mine were tied up nearby. I thought about it for a minute or so and told him my plan to get out. I thinned the one to make the easy carom-to-combo, but with draw and a touch of left to get the 3 broken out, leaving the white with shape in the center of the table. He was mad.

(On the cuetable, page up to see the lines.)

Good selection. Not many would see that.

Nice ones on the 3 and 4. Good outs take vision. Shots like these are the only reason I like 8 ball. I like being a problem-solver. The victories worth enjoying are those where you have to work for it, getting out on a table that seems hopeless.

On your first diagram, wouldn't your "smooth follow" kill the cue ball on the rail ?? I'll have to set that one up and try it!! Looks like a killer shot..

It's all about coefficients of friction. If the cue ball is dirty, or the rail cloth is sticky, or the bed cloth is chalk encrusted, then the shot has no hope. With a clean cue ball and relatively new, clean rail and bed cloth, the action is completely natural. As the cue ball approaches the end rail it has follow and (unless the rail cloth is awful) the cue ball will still be spinning toward the end rail after it hits the end rail and heads toward the one ball. If the cue ball is clean and the bed cloth is relatively new, the spin toward the end rail will not have worn off completely when the cue ball hits the one. The one kills most of the linear momentum, and what's left is the top spin toward the end rail.

Mark is right. On a 3c table, the larger balls retain spin longer, plus with clean cloth/balls the shot's a hanger. But, on the pool table, it's got to play fast. When I hit the shot, I happened to be playing on brand new cloth soon after the owner had it installed. And, one thing I forgot to mention, the white was particularly slick because I had been shooting masse shots with silicone earlier. (It just now occurred to me, sorry I neglected to mention that.) ;)

Side note: Mark, thanks for your newfound support of "3-Cushion Grandmaster". I know you/everyone will love it!

Eric,

The Verhoeven I play on regularly was recovered just over a week ago, and brand new balls were broken out. I made this shot on the first try.

Now, after a week of play, the first object ball needs to be well inside the first diamond (unless I use my "magic" silicone rag).

Edit: This is the first time I've tried to show the Wei table inside a thread. I don't know why my lines didn't show up. The shot is with the white ball, maximum right hand English a bit above center at five rail speed. Hit the end rail between the red and the yellow. The right English straightens out the cue ball so it hits the yellow full. The cue ball speed gets killed and the high, right takes the cue ball to the side cushion, back to the end cushion, and spins into the red.
