checking shaft run out?

First I look at the grain then down the dowel , sometimes that can tell the future . Put through spindle on lathe and spin to see where to put centers to compensate for run out . If you put your centers in properly you can save a shaft that has a bit of run out . Experience is really the best teacher and everyone , pretty much, has a different take . If the grain totally runs off the side I won't use for a shaft , maybe a coring dowel ...:eek:
