chinese slate

Chinese slate is of inferior quality, in general. It is very porous when compared to Italian or even American slate.

Chinese slate? That's the particle board stuff, right? I would say it's VERY POROUS. :D

Italian slate is softer and a bit more flexible. Chinese slate is a little bit harder and therefore a little more brittle. Brazilian slate is even harder. Chinese and Brazilian slate require a bit more attention during the machining process to achieve flatness, but modern machines and techniques work well to achieve a good flat diamond honed surface. Good slate should be at least an inch thick and should be supported by a wood frame at least an inch thick (more is better). Italian, Chinese, or Brazilian slate, from a good company with modern equipment, are all acceptable for pool tables. Rasson and Westone are two good Chinese slate suppliers.
