This is a hypothetical question aimed towards the cuemakers (or at least the cue savvy) in this forum. If you were to purchase a production cue what would it be? I would also be interested in the reason behind your decision.

Regards,
Dave

i've tried alot of cues, mostly production and some custom. not sure what your price range might be, but for somewhere around $300 (or less), you can get a pretty nice Lucasi Cue.

i also like Cuetec and Falcon. one consideration might be to get one compatible with the Predator Shaft, and Predator does make a shaft for the Lucasi Uniloc Joint.

some i didnt really like were Meucci, Schmelke, and Viking. anyway, thats my $.02

Some "custom" cuemakers make hundreds of cues a year.
They sell cues at production cues' prices now.
You might want to check them out.
You can easily buy "custom" cue now for $300.
But, Joss makes the best production for the dollar imo.

This question wasn't sparked out of a purchasing quest, just curiosity. Would your answer be the same if the price was irrelevant?

Dave

P.S- I also don't like the way the meucci (at least the new ones) felt.

Joss Cues, would be my first choice. Fact is, when I had a contract to furnish the APA with cues, Joss Cues,[Dan Janes] built those cues for me.Did a really nice job. Not just saying this because he's a friend, he does great work.

the butt/handle diameter of a Joss is a little bigger than alot of cues. i'd go try one first before you buy one sight unseen. that was the #1 reason i traded mine back in.

Schon is also very, very good.

I must agree with Blud and Joseph Cues on this one. I do some cue repair and I got to tell ya, I have seen straight shafts on old Joss cues like on nobody elses. The workmanship is as good as it gets. I have a "99" Joss cue that has never hit a ball. Model A7. Straight as an arrow. I collect cues and can tell ya, that is unique. Schon makes a very nice cue also. I also like Pechauer. I had an Oliveia and it hit sweet, probably because Blud taught him how to build cues,

A lot of Joss's have fat butts, but some do not. My friend's Joss has a butt diameter similar to my Dayton (which is pretty slim), but most Joss's are much thicker. I have no idea if this fluctuation varies by models or by individual cues.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

For the price, I like McDermott and Viking. For a little more money you can get a sweet Joss or a mid-range Schon. IMO, Schons are great, except they are front heavy. Pechauer is a pretty good buy for the price also.
All in all, I prefer custom cues. I have in my collection and have played with Prather, Espiritu, Jacoby, Dominiak, Carter, Viking, Pechauer, Dzuricky, and plan on adding more as the months and years go by. I am currently shooting with a Pechauer and breaking with the Jacoby. Photos of each cue here... www.zimsrack.com "Cue Collection".

Best of luck!

Production Choice

Depends On Price,

Low Price = Cuetec
Mid Price = Joss
Pricey = Schon

If You Are Going To Spend The Money On A Schon Buy A Custom. Although Everyone Has There Own Idea Of What Custom Means. There Are Only A Few True Custom Makers. Most Are In My Opinion Cue Producers That Do Custom Variations Of There Cues. Just My Opinion.
