Chris Melling mentions the IPT

Beware, Chris will be one to watch out for on the IPT in the future:

---------------
Who is the greatest cue sports all-rounder...Ronnie O'Sullivan, Jimmy White, Steve Davis? Or maybe Chris Melling?

08 Dec 2005 15:53:00 The ’Magician’ has strong claims to the title-especially as he is almost certain to be rubbing shoulders with snooker’s big hitters next season.

Melling is in joint first place in the latest Pontin’s International Open Series Order of Merit.

The 26-year-old Keighley professional became the fifth different winner on the PIOS this season when he defeated fellow Yorkshireman Paul Davison 6-5 in the final at Pontin’s last week.

"Going top of the rankings actually made me happier than winning the title," the twice-World 8-Ball Pool champion told worldsnooker.com

"Most of the other guys have played in all five tournaments; I’ve only played in four. I missed the other because I was on a stag ’do’ in Prague!"

If Melling does gain promotion to the 2006/06 Tour it will be his second time on the main circuit having suffered relegation two years ago.

But he divides his time playing snooker, 8-Ball and 9-Ball Pool. Indeed, he finished runner-up to Gareth Potts in the 2005 888.com World 8-Ball final, just missing the chance to become the first player to win the event three times.

He is no mean American 9-Ball player either. In 2001, he reached the last 16 of the World Championship and was the top British finisher.

"I love snooker but I have to play pool to pay the bills," says Melling, a regular exhibition partner of Jimmy White.

"I’m a bit gutted I wasn’t admitted to the IPT Tour but I’m going to play in the two events I’m eligible for. I think I might do a bit of damage.

"The deadline for entries was September 30 and I was away in Spain. I went into an internet cafe and sent in my details but didn’t get on."

So what’s next for the cue wizard? "I’ve got the UK Trickshot Championship coming up in Swindon and then I’m going to enjoy Christmas.

"If I do get back on the Tour for next season I’ll be better prepared and hopefully will stay on longer this time."

It is a shame you have to do a search like trying to find a needle in a haystack just to find a one line mention of the tournament. Now that it is over it's yesterdays news. What happened to the publicity machine they were assembling? This really goes to show where pool ranks in importance. The national spelling Bee gets wall to wall coverage and the winner is almost always on the Jay Leno show. So far two events over a million dollars and nothing.

I found the mention while reading the news at World Snooker which I regularly do. I thought it would be of interest to people who know who Chris Melling is, one of the greatest English 8-Ball players ever.

Seems you are simply obnoxious and in denial Macguy. Already the Sigel - Jones match has been broadcast more that any pool event in US history I guess. If not, it's not far away.

You don't need to pump print media PR when you're broadcasting 3 times a day.

I have not found any coverage of the tournament or it's results anywhere. Even with all the showing of the Sigel Jones match, and most are in the middle of the night, it has had no coverage. That was my point, it is not news and their PR people have not gotten it out. You don't need PR people if you are just going to buy your time on TV that doesn't get you in to the main stream. As skeptical as I was I still expected to see the players doing the rounds of the shows like Letterman, Regis, Tony Danza, Leno and headlines in newspapers, at least covering the day to day results and final winner. What happened to the marketing?

You haven't noticed coverage? You don't think TV broadcasting is not the most powerful coverage you can get?

The broadcasting is not mostly in the middle of the night as you incorrectly state.

Take a look at the 250ish broadcast dates over a 6 week period below. Then take a look in the mirror. You're just remaining negative for the sake of consistancy. Wasn't it you saying that the Orlando venue hadn't even been booked?

You haven't noticed coverage? You don't think TV broadcasting is not the most powerful coverage you can get?

The broadcasting is not mostly in the middle of the night as you incorrectly state.

Take a look at the 250ish broadcast dates over a 6 week period below. Then take a look in the mirror. You're just remaining negative for the sake of consistancy. Wasn't it you saying that the Orlando venue hadn't even been booked?
The tournament is news yet not any news papers I have been able to find doing google searches covered it or reported the results. That was my original point. Main stream is not late night informercials. When is this stuff on TV I haven't seen it yet? Unless John Q. Public is reading the IPT web site they will never see it except by chance. I tried to track down one of the broadcasts from the list you put up just to see it in a TV listing. Show me one TV listing from the list actually saying it is going to be on? TV guide or what ever. I'm not the best on a computer maybe someone else can find a local listing saying pool is on TV. I give up I have been looking for a half hour now and can't find one actual listing. How are people supposed to watch, you have to just catch it by sheer chance? The ones I finally did find all they it said was paid programming. Is there some rule if you buy the time they won't tell what is on? As far as what I said about the Orlando booking thing, It was not a solid deal till the last minute nothing had been signed. I'm glad you didn't fly to the US only to find out last minute it had been canceled.

Macguy, you keep making the same mistake here....Go get a book on marketing and realize it is a process. You seem to want to open the restaurant before the food is even cooked.

Give it the time necessary to make the pieces fit together. Help spread the word to those you know. First must come the creation of the critical mass necessary to make this real news to the average Joe, then follows the mainstream folks. Throwing money into large news media right now would be a biiiiiiiggggggg waste of resources. Big waste. Think about it as if it was your money, not Kevin's.

My personal growth attitude toward the IPT is: This is one of the greatest opportunities I've ever had in my life to learn, from the beginning of an idea to fruition, from one of the best marketers in the world. How often does a value like this come along? Not often. Maybe never for a lot of people.

I'm watching and learning from Kevin. He is, to me, a teacher and mentor. Much as I learned to play good pool by watching great players, I'm expanding my marketing prowess by watching and learning how Kevin creates something valuable out of a pile of crap. I'd suggest, to all potential marketers, this attitude. This is a once-in-a-life opportunity to learn from a great one, foiables and all. Use it wisely, imho.

News people cover something because it is news, not because you pay, so where is, was, the coverage? And contrary to what you say, he pays for everything and likes it that way because he has control. I guess he kept it secret from the news services who will cover a cat in a tree, a dog in a well or a car chase live for an hour. A million dollars given away in pool for the first time ever isn't news? I guess not, if they didn't cover this, then they will never cover any pool event. Kevin doesn't want any real news people around anyway, they ask questions, he just wants what he can control and there is nothing wrong with that.
