Ok Gang,
Chuck has been gracious enough to send out a "Worldwide traveling" version
of his famous double refund cue. I tried to get on the list for the Stateside cue but chuck didnt want to send it overseas b/c the cue contained ivory. Fair enough.... I figured it be a lost cause, but low and behold I got got a PM from Chuck a few days later. He had a customer back out of a sneaky pete custom....with NO IVORY... so he offered it up to me for a test drive!!!
Chuck sent over the cue and I got it a few days ago. It is a standard look SP ebony in maple,no wrap, black collar, moori tip. Pretty much run of the mill stuff....that is until you come to the pin, a GIANORMUS wooden pin! That wood pin is the calling card of a Starkey built cue and honestly, it is something all of you should get your hands on at some point.
This cue delivers a SOLID hit, very stiff and lotsa feedback. If any of have read my posts on the subject before, then you know that I dont go for all of the hype over how much a different size pin effects the "hit" of a cue. I still stand by that point of view as it applies to the usual pins. But Chuck builds a cue that has one of the most distinctive hits I have ever felt and I think that most of that credit has to go the pin.
I just recently (6mos or so ) switched to a pencil thin 314 that I bought from AZBer Double Dave, and prior to that I always played with long /thin tapered shafts, so adjusting to a big fat 13mm "stiff" tapered shaft felt a little odd and the ferrule is a bit longer than I am used to.. but this is a CUSTOM cue and those details are a matter of personal "feel" that could be adjusted to the specific buyers requests.
I will get some pics of the cue posted up within the next day or so, just so you all can take a look. One thing ,besides the massive pin, that sticks out is the butterflies in the butt of the cue. Wonderful bright butterflies stuck right at the bottom in the middle of all of that deep dark black ebony. I know it sounds strange, and it looked strange when I first saw it, but it has kinda grown on me.
Chuck builds one offs....he is a true custom cue builder and puts out one helluva cue stick form his shop. I would honestly recommend a Starkey built cue to anybody out there, and since he starts out around only $350 or so any halfway serious player can consider Chuck on the their next cue purchase.
Thanks ( and apologies for being so "wordy")
Shane Napier
