Chump or Champ for the Money?

Do you play better or worse for the money and under pressure?

I know you are exaggerating. Humor and its attendant subtleties are sometimes lost on the good 'ol web. I agree with your statement here, by the way.

Cheers...

he is right I cant play for $5, and I'll play any game for $1000/game as long as its a even game, not a trap, he isnt exaggerating at all; and i'm not the biggest fish in the pond, there are lots of guys who play higher than me. I will in time, i'll grow into it. i'm not going to play bartrum with the 7 ball for a dime a game he would rob me, i just dont play good enough(wish i did), if we find the right spot I would, but that bet aint gonna put any lead in his stroke anyways,

he aint exaggerating at all, I been in $1000/game 8 ball for the past few weeks, its done now. I came out loser, even on racks perhaps maybe down 2-3 racks. he kept improving and I could keep out running the weight. So I gave him the 4 ball, then I made it and he thought he had the 4-out, which was a move, he speaks perfect english, german is his first language,

I have no chance at giving him the 4-out unless he laid a big price on the $$$. I won the first game on a 2-9 combo, next game I broke it was a cosmo up to the 6-7 i made the 8 on the break. I made the 1,2,3,4 and he said "now I make the 5 and I win" I said no I made the 4 now who ever makes the 9 wins the 6,7 were a mess, I dont know who would have won that rack, He started getting loud with me and the refree we hired, I threw his $200 back from the first game abd wiped the balls and left, they got into a big argument i found out later.

I was stuck 4 games of 8 ball $4000, and asked to switch to 9 ball, he asked for the 4, I called Shannon and asked him if the 4 or 5 was better for me, Shannon said the 4 was a bit more, it was wimmer breaks. I liked the 4-to me it seemed less, Shannon said it wasnt but real similar. I asked to play for $500/game to see how it goes, if its even lets raise it to $1000/game. he said $200. I said I'm stuck 20 barrels, he said lets play for free and have fun, I said "I'm stuck $4000 this aint no fun, bet $500". Nope just $200. So i'm 20 barrels stuck I won the first game 19 stuck, then he pulled the 4-out move on me, I threw the $200 back at him wiped the balls with my cue and left.

Good action that went bad, he left all pissed off, laid down rubber in his $140,000 Benz all pissed but up $4,000. That was week before last, the biggest action I been in since then is $20 1P and one game for $40.

I aint never played for big $$$ like Dip, scott, Bartrum but when the oppertunity comes along I will. I like action, the past 2 years I have lost more than I won, the only losing years since 85, but things are different now and the win rate will improve. lots of times whats going on in your life can effect your pool game, Alex told me that at dinner a year or 2 ago, and he is right.

I've never played for $ before, there isnt really a billiard hall in my town. Well there is one but its run down and mostly inhabited by high school kids drinking Mt Dew and slamming the balls :(

I do play league though, and I enjoy playing under pressure and when theres lots of people watching.

Even though I dog it plenty for the money I still voted that I play better. Why? Because when I play for money then I am more focused and more intense and it means more to me. When I do play good the high is better than any drugs. When I play good for "free" then it doesn't do anything for me.

Losing when it means something hurts and winning when it means something is indescribable. So overall in my life I am about even on the money gambling but the times I played great were really great.

Nerves.

I think everyone has a different comfort zone when it comes to playing for the cash.. I don't need to bet my house to get a rush from playing pool, I enjoy the game(s) and enjoy it even more if I have some cash in the match.. I think why I like playing for money is making a game, then snapping it off. I like the back and forth of getting "what I think" is a fair game.. Most anyone will fold over something and it don't have to even be money.. Just my opinion on it so I voted play better.. The Dster.

This is very true. Your game can change for a multitude of reasons. Bad day at work, fight with a girlfriend, falling in love with a girl friend, money problems, money swings, etc. etc. etc.

As I said, your game can change for a multitude of reasons sometimes your game gets better not just worse for these reasons. I guess this post really sums up the reason I started this thread in the first place.

What are the contributing factors that make you play your best?

Ultimately, the next time you approach the table and play in a competition, you are not bringing any new shots that you don't already know. Your knowledge base of shots, moves, etc. has not changed significantly.

Your mind set is the single largest fluctuating factor.

Concentration and focus are heightened when we are playing our best. All of our efforts are pinpointed on the task at hand. There is something going on within us to pull that trigger. Describe what you think it is in you.

I've won and lost money gambling. However, when pool meant a lot to me was playing my regular playing partner and starting to win on a regular basis. We always play for blood, which to me is worth more than money. It's a pride thing, and I can assure you that you can only get that one way, and money ain't got anything to do with it.

I even derive a lot of meaning from just practicing at home alone. To me, if you're not focusing and trying your best, then you're not playing the game. Money has got nothing to do with it for me. I'll play you just as hard at tiddlywinks for free as I will for the cash.

I guess that you can say that I play pool for the love of the game and honing my skill and ability for its own sake is all that I require.

I can't even remember the details of some of my gambling matches. I will always remember certain games that I won or lost playing for "free".

Cheers to all who play the game and for whatever reason...

How many people are out there playing for the rent money? If that is the case, I guess I'll never have enough heart, because I don't pay rent. But then again I own my house, which is something that most pool players will never have the joy of experiencing.

Y'all can keep your heart. I'll keep my house.

Is that your house in your avatar pic? Nice place!

I voted better under pressure. I was the same way playing college sports too -the bigger the stage, the better I played. In pool leagues, I played my best in Vegas and went undefeated. Playing for the cash I can play jam up pool against the roadies but can't turn it up that far playing against people I know. Weird. I remember a time when I really needed some extra money for a V-day gift for my girl (diamond earings) and I was about five bills short with only a couple days to go. That was the only time I was able to play my best pool against regular opponents to get the money I needed. I've often wondered how I'd do today if the money was for the mortgage or food, just to survive. Hopefully I will never have to find the answer to that one. I always bet what I can afford to lose to there's not that same amount of pressure as a must win.
