clean finish on pocket without cloth strip.

When I see finished pockets on gold crowns I see what looks to be a 1/2" cloth strip on the bottom edge of the pocket. This strip is no doubt used to hide the relief cuts. Is this necessary? can you stretch the cloth enough to staple the relief tabs under the pocket so it looks clean without the use of that strip? I tried to find this on an old tread but either did not choose the right search words or they haven't given it any attention. I don't mind the look of the additional strip but they are no doubt glued and might pull off over time.

If I must use them then how are they made? The ones that look nice look like they might be folded over, maybe ironed to create a nice sharp crease.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Here is a gold crown that I am working in as we speak..3030 on this install.. It takes a lot of getting to know how cloth stretches and acts when cutting in the pockets to be able to get all the pockets a clean finish. I suggest using the plumbing strap to finish the pockets if you don't have experience installing cloth.... A lot of cloth installers can not figure out how to get the excess in the pockets.

Plumbing strap tip

Thank you so much for the plumbing strap tip it looks clean and should hold up. I also see the relief cuts you made on the cloth on the edge of the slate these cuts should make the cloth pull better down into the depth of the pocket. It has been a year since I set up my gold crown 1 with the cloth that was on it when I purchased and moved it. I decided to wait a while and gather info before undertaking the recovery task.

I start on it tomorrow. I'll post my pictures when it is complete along with my observations. I did get a dry run on the original install that I did myself with the old felt that had been trimmed, man was that a hassle.

You can visit my blog where I have shared a few pics of the way I have finished pockets with and without wood slate frame/liner.
What cloth will you be installing on your table?

pocket finish

Thank you Rob, What nice work. I think I spotted another small but very nice touch. Do you sand the edges of your cushion facings? Looks slightly rounded in the pictures. Yes, I love Glens work too but I never did see the plumbing strap tip. I will be using Takini cloth that I purchased on this sight from user "singernak" I took a chance but until my grand kids age 9 and 11 get little older I opted to save a few bucks. The cloth is used on the Asian tour so it can't be all bad. Looks and feels fine with good weight.

I have all the time in the world so I was wondering if pre-streching the cloth for 24 hours helps reduce the relaxation of the cloth when I do the actual install? When I look at all the posts on this site and youtube on cloth stretching I see how important it is to get a good stretch.

Thanks again,
Allen
