Cleaning a leather cue case?

I recentley bought an older Dennis Swift cue case that was in very good- excellent condition. It has a black 1 1/2" scuff mark across one of the pockets that I'd like to take out if doing so wouldn't take the dye out of the leather in the process. I'm not sure what caused the scuff mark so i don't know what I'd be attempting to remove.

I took it to a shoemaker and he successfully eliminated a colored in black eight ball with real light sand paper. My cue case has a design of a nine ball rack as one of the previous owners for whatever reason:confused: had colored in the eight ball with in that etched in leather design.I was very pleased when it came out with out damaging the leather.

The black lline on my case is not noticably ugly and is somewhat camofluaged except for more close up inspections so I can live with it.The shoemaker tells meto just live with it as any attempts to remove it could case some damage.I'm just seeking a second opinion of some of the AZ guru's here.:D

Also the bottom pouch/pocket is a little faded on the bottom corners. The shoemaker tells me to get a lighter color of shoe polish than the case and buff it in as the shoe polish tends to go a little darker when buffed. He figures it could be blended in successfully with no problems.Another friend tells me to use a very very small amount of vaseline to restore the color.Does anyone have any comments of the above ideas or any other suggestions?I'm just seeking other opinions so all replys appreciated.
