Cleaning out insert threads

Hello everyone, I have a question that I need to ask before I try to help out a fellow pool player. He bought a carbon fiber shaft from rhino for his production, Joss Cue with the standard 5/16 x 14 piloted pin. They sent them the first one and he sent it back because it didn’t fit. Rhino then sent him like a test joint protector to make sure that fit his butt end before they sent out another. The test joint protector fit perfect so they sent him out another shaft, and that one did not fit either. For one, the pilot was too thick which I took down to match perfectly with the test joint protector. The problem now is that the threads won’t go all the way down and leaves about a 4 mm gap and I can tell the pin. It’s either catching something in the threads or the insert is

tapered which I don’t think it is tapered. Testing the depth , there is plenty of room for the pin. He emailed them back and they told him to take it to a Q repair to have it fixed and they would knock $40 off the price, basically send him $40 back. I was wondering if I bought this 5/16 x 14 HSS tap, if that would clean out the threads? I know the right way to do. It is to replace the whole insert but I don’t trust my Mid-America basic Cue repair Lathe to do it especially if the threads get messed up pulling out the insert. I really think the threads are just a little damaged towards the back of the insert and if I could just clean them out with a tap it would fix the problem. I’ve included a picture of the tap that I want to use and just need your advice. Thank you all in advance for your advice.

First off....my advice is DO NOT BUY A RHINO..... secondly, running a tap thru the insert should cure all problems as long as the depth of the hole is deeper than the pin length. Also you can use a tap that has been modified to be a bottoming tap, so basically cut the pre-tap area of the tap off, and then it will thread all the way down to the bottom of the hole

The Rhino I bought fit 4 out of 5 5/16x14 butts i had. The last one I shaved the last thread down to fit (maybe the pin was longer or the insert wasnt threaded enough) but it left a small gap between the shaft and butt before I trimmed it

You shaved down the last few threads on the pin connected to the butt ofthe cue? I. Definitely don’t wanna do that. What I don’t understand is they sent him a test insert which kinda looked like a joint protector and that fits perfect but then the shaft they sent him not only had a thicker diameter pilot on it but the pin still will not go all the way through.

Shaved one at least a dozen left. Eazy with a lathe. My biggest bitch was the 21.5mm overall joint diameter compared to my other shafts.

I just recently purchased the same shaft, 5/16x14 for my Joss and it did not fit. They had me measure the pin thickness and the pin length and said that I probably needed the oversize version, however a fellow league player had the same shaft in a breakcue and it fit perfectly. Rhino is refusing to send me anything but an oversized version, telling me that I must return the original shaft to Vietnam on my dime which will take about 20 days. One and done with this company ! It is probably a smart move on their part that they do not have an 800 number or at least, they do not provide one on their website.

I have Rhino's for my Schons and for my Jacoby. All fit great, but, the thread depth runs really close. before you try and tap it, you might want to slip a piece of wire or something down the shaft insert to see what depth you have to work with, and that way you can compare that with the pin you are trying to screw in. If you have the depth available I guess you could try and clean it up with the tap a bit. If retaping, I might try and just run the tap maybe 1/2-3/4 of the way first and work your way up to it.
Also you may end up having to as Dave suggested, cut some off the tap so that it taps further down. Thinking more about that now though, you probably shouldn't have to do that as you said the pin is piloted so the taped portion shouldn't need to go all the way down. Make sure to blow it out good with an air hose after tapping or you may just bugger it up again. I think their three testers only deal with the tightness of the pin fit in the insert, not anything to do with a pilot.

I had a similar experience with Rhino's shafts. A guy in my league bought one for his Esoteric cue but the threads didn't fit well. So had to buy a new tap for it cause Rick uses a 3/8-14 i think. So I run the tap in and out a few times to make sure the threads and all are cleaned up and it was still not threading right. So i measured the inside hole, chucked it up and started to open the minor I.D. If i remember right I only had to go up to the next drill size a few thou and it threaded on just fine. Maybe this info will help in your solution.

i talked to Rhino and they said one of the big problems with 5/16x14 joints is the variance. Said the pins and the pilots are all over the place. On their new Must shaft they don't even offer it because of it. i know a few that have the original shaft with no issues on their Schon's.

We have 2 Rhino 5/16x14 shafts for my 4 Schon's. They fit all of them fine, but I wish I had got the version that screws on tighter.
No real biggie, not sure if it even matters as they cinch up tight and don't come loose while playing.
What I like about them is they play really similar at 12.5mm to my Ultra shafts that are turned down to 12.5mm. There may be a difference, but I'm not good enough to notice it.
Had a Jacoby Black in 12.7 also, beautiful shaft, smoothest of any shaft I have ever felt, but just played slightly different than my ultra shafts, and as a back up shaft I didn't want to deal with that, so I sold it on here at a great price for him.
