Closed Bridge for Follow Shots?

I read somewhere about using a closed bridge for frozen to the rail shots and thought about using a closed bridge for follow shots.

So I thought I'd try it...

It seems to me a closed bridge works much better for follow shots than an open bridge. Anyone else notice this?

I don't know if a closed bridge is better for frozen to the rail shots or not - yet. Need to experiment a little more. I had a few problems with the cue ball stopping after a few inches. The cue ball kind of jammed between the table and my cue sometimes with a closed bridge. (Shooting level)

I think for shots off of the rail that a closed bridge is better because with an open bridge the cue will squirt upwards off the cue ball and it wouldn't follow through fully. Closed bridge would keep it from doing this as much. As far as on the rail is concerned... for me it is too awkward. From what I've seen I think most pro's use an open bridge when the cue ball is frozen to the rail. So that is what I go with.

I PLayed an old boy from Idaho a few years ago,man he was pretty tough
I asked him how he got so good.He said he started out playing with spuds
instead of balls??.

Bill, any time your current fundamentals don't allow you to play with an open bridge, you need to use a closed bridge. As your fundamentals get better, you'll find you can execute a larger and larger fraction of shots with an open bridge. Most players never get their grip hand under good enough control to give up the closed bridge for power and english shots.

For follow shots, there is really no reason to use one or the other except on certain fancy follow shots (such as the bank shot from the start of the "Hustler"). In those shots, the cue stick has to fly up off the cue ball in order not to hit the cue ball again.

oldroller I wasn't sure at first what spuds were so I looked it up and found it is potatoes? I've only lived in Idaho for 5 months. I imagine the guy you played was joking or maybe you are.
