Cloth choice for home table

Hi All,

I have been reading these forums for the past three weeks and want to thank all that contribute.

I just bought a GCIII and need to overhaul it. BTW, the wife wanted a furniture table but part of the negotiations for getting the GCII was that I had to agree to get the cloth Camel or Khaki. New cushions, cloth and setup. I have a limited budget and the table will be used by the family and friends, no serious players. I know Simonis is the way to go but my budget does not allow. I have been quoted for Mali, Championship and Velocity Pro. The Velocity seems like the best deal for $50 more than the others. So my questions are:

1. Which Cloth should I get?
2. Would all 3 cloths last the same?
3. I would like it to be treated for spills, is this something I should be concerned with?
4. Before I bought it I got only 2.5 table lengths and when I hit the foot rail there was a loud thump. I thought it could of been loose or coming off but it turned out to be hard as a rock. All the other cushions are springy. Can I get away with changing one rail now and then later down the road upgrade to newer SpeedCushions or Artemis?

Thanks in advance.

Cushions - if you're going to replace them, and it sounds like you should, do them all at one time. If you do 1 now you'll wind up having to buy more cloth later on because rail cloth is typically not reuseable. Better to set the table up right from the start. A good quality cushion set with facings will cost you less than $100.

Spills - worsted cloths have very tight weaves which make them naturally spill resistant. Besides - if you keep drinks away from the table you won't have to worry about spills.

Durability - most any quality cloth used in a home environment should give many years of service. Again, a worsted cloth is recommended if for nothing more then eliminating the pilling you'll get with a napped cloth.

Cloth - in the long run you'll be happier with the speed and accuracy of a worsted cloth. Camel is available in all 3 brands you mentioned. I don't know where you got your prices from but I can tell you that Velocity is typically only around $25 - $35 higher then any of the Mali or Championship napped cloths. $50 higher is not a good deal and I'd suggest you shop around some more.

Which will be a good quality cushion?

I'm concerned on staining the cloth. The table is going to be full view in our Family room. I plan on not having drinks around the table but with a 9 & 11 yr old it is a strong possibility it will see some stains. So, it looks like the Volicity Pro from your response.

I'd suggest the Tour Ed K55 Cushions by Championship at $95 (including a set of facings).
If coin is no object then Artemis at $225+. Superspeeds fall somewhere inbetween.

A table cover protects the table when not in use.
If you're concerned about the cloth you can apply Fabricoate - much the same as scotchguard on furniture.

I've seen SuperSpeed for $139 can't recall about shipping though. Do you think still getting the Championship is a better buy than the SuperSpeed?

Every bit of money saved helps. Also is this something I can install myself? I have already removed the rails and staples. I still need to recover the table so I will have the tech put the cloth on the rails.

I doubt you'd notice much difference between the Tour Ed and Superspeed cushions other then price.

Installing new cushions is not too difficult provided you train-up on exactly what's involved in the process.
If you have an installer lined up it doesn't hurt to get a quote.
I would suggest you check into his qualifications before commiting to the work.
