Quote from Samm Diep's interview with John Schmidt:

Q: What do you practice most?

A: 10-ball and my 10-ball break because that's the weakest part of my game. When I hit balls, I'm probably playing 10-ball or the one-pocket ghost. I'll sprinkle straight pool in there but right now my cloth is just so old. It's just so tough.

My cloth is four years old and is heavily worn (i've got grooves in the felt from breaking, millions of those white friction dots, etc.). It certainly seems that the balls don't open up reliably after a typical breakshot (with a goodly amount of force). How much do you guys think that cloth is a factor in this game. Also, is it time to replace the felt (note: I am loathe to do this, as I am a notorious cheapskate and 860 is expensive and I don't want to have to plead for $$$ with the wife - she might beat me!!!).

Good Question

About 6 months ago. I put Simonis HR 860 Tournament cloth (Lite Blue) on my table and it is worn out already. I have ridges along the bottom, where I rack the balls.
I was on a 50 something run the other day and made a mistake of shooting a shot very softly across that area and it rolled off big time to end the run. Everyone told me that it is a much better then the regular 860 but it is not. It is the same and the speed is the same. I have used a few different brands of cloth over the years and they all wear out. Simonis is the best and I will stick to it but it wears out just like the others.
I use to go 2 years before changing it out but I am going to change mine out soon. Going back to Green or I might try the Tan just to see what it might look like in my game room. For guys learning how to jump balls. When your cloth wears out is the best time to practice b/c you do not have to worry about marking up the table.
4 years is way too long. It needs to be changed out. My wife beats me on a regular bases, even when I do nothing wrong,........LOL

whoa, I wonder how many hours of play per week your table gets? HR stands for High Resistant or smth similar, so I expect it to be more durable that "plain" Simonis. In a poolhall I visit they change the cloth once per year. In household conditions I would think the cloth should last longer?

Yes

Yes, in the pool rooms, they change out once per year.
It looks like that I am also going to have to go to a yearly change out.
When I was working. I practiced about an hour a day & about 3 hours on my days off. Now that I am retired. I practice about 3 hours per day. So, my table does get a lot of use out of it.
Yes, I heard that it was so much more durable but I think it is the same.

my cloth is pretty old too, I think this contributes to me not running more than a couple racks occasionally. I like the tough conditions for every other game I play but not for straight pool.

This is happening to me more and more it seems. Also, sometimes when I shoot a long rail bank softly, it will roll off toward the end. I think that I remember Freddy the Beard mentioning in his first book that this was attributable to cloth effects. I seem to be using more soft shots in 14.1 than in any other game that I play. Bear in mind that I've got no instruction in this game at all - nor have I had the pleasure of an opponent for that matter - so I'm probably just playing it wrong. In any event, I guess I will have to start saving for new cloth...

Miliken is a super cloth- immediatley after *install* it grips extremly good. My favourite cloth.

cloth conditions

The condition of the cloth doesnt make alot of difference in most games however in 14.1 it makes the difference between running a few racks or running out the match.A new cloth is not what you want to play straight pool on as being so slick the balls slide instead of roll and puts you on the wrong side of the balls alot in which what my saying is you end up playing puzzles instead of playing patterns. With any cloth conditions the top 14.1 players will eventually adjust but the high numbers runs wont be as often.

Ratta:
I heard of that cloth. How does it hold up? Is it fast?
I know that they used it in the Steve Mizerak Senior Classic.

sent you a pm my friend :-)

@Vahmurka
Just played on one table where Z9 was installed- to give here a preview would not be serious bro (even not to you and also not to the Z9 :p )
but i will let you now, if i see it next time and then would have a bit more time to play on it :-)

Personally, I like Simonis 760 on a table for straight pool. I like a fast table so I don't have to use much power. I want the balls to open up if I hit them medium/soft. I hate a slow table. Hate it, hate it.

Agree. We had a single table with 760 at the local hall, which is now gone. I loved playing on it. The speed was lovely. You just don't see it anywhere else. I don't know if anyone else in the state is using it.

If a pool hall ever has to recloth, I would pay the difference between 860 and 760. Wait, what do you mean there's no difference!? Why won't they just try it on one table?!!@#?

I'd like to try the 300 carom cloth for laffs.

Fast cloth

Tourament 2000 by Gorina of Spain is great for straight pool.
It's faster than 760 and wears much better.

I was told HR stands for humidity resistant.

I don t like *too speedy* cloth- a friend installed (very long ago) a Super-Granito-Cloth (especially for trick-shot- at this time the fastes available cloth) on a 9 ft pool table.....ROFL: for 14.1 it was funny.......but believe me. 2 weeks later i ve had to play a big tournament where all tables were equipped with Mali Cloth...........oh .....my.......god^^
*headshot*- it was terrible, lol^^

back to topic- i really like the Miliken- it immediatley gives you enough grip even after install. Very nice cloth- cheaper than simonis and from my experience (and also from experience from several club-players) it holds extremly long his good condition!

Z9 is way better then Simonis, it lasts longer....we play on it for years now as we are the home of Z9

can you imagine, we have only one local dealer for Milliken and it is actually more expensive than Simonis here! Meaning if I ever decide to try it on my to-be table I will have to buy it abroad I suppose.
