Coaches

Do all the top players have personal coaches? I keep hearing about Jasmin Ouschan and her coach Michael Neumann. I'm trying to understand, what can Mr. Neumann show Jasmin to improve her game. I completely understand having a coach/instructor in the beginning. But once your a world class player whats a coach do? If Jasmin misses a shot, she's got the video tapes she can review and see what happened. Or is a coach to the pro's more of a motivational supporter?

Do the top NFL players have coaches? Yes! NBA players? MLB players?
All sports have specialized coaches that work with even the best players. Do you think Eli Manning doesn't work with a quarterback coach?
Most PGA golfers have coaches.

Why should pool be any different?

Having someone who can watch you, and knows how to spot the little things is a huge benefit to any athlete. Trying to do it all on your own places you at a huge disadvantage.

The best coaches in the NBA and in other pro sports usually were high level or long career pros as well. In pool the top pros can play so long that when they are done, they are just done. SVB would probably love to have Archer as a coach but the fact is Archer can still go compete.

As far as having a trained instructor or whatever try to coach a top pro, that's just not going to happen. Jasmin can have a coach because the guy who coaches her probably gives her the 7-ball. He can show her things she can't do.

I think there are a very very very few guys who could actually coach a pro and it be worthwhile. If not, the coach would still be a player!

I don't know Steve, Pool isn't a multi billion dollar industry like the NBA or NFL. Those players are paid so much money they hire people to follow them around to make sure they tie their shoes right.

I think the pool Pro's are far beyond the fundamentals. I have a hard time believing Alison Fischers' Coach works with her on her stance or preshot routine. Maybe they do...
I'm just curious to know what the Coach's and the Pro's go over on any given Sunday. These players practice all the time, I'm just wondering what role their Coach plays.

Any of you Instructors ever work with the Pro's? What did you do? What did they want from you?

I have worked with a couple of pros. And believe it or not, fundamentals is where we usually ended up. Not the basic grip, bridge, stance, stroke that I work on with most students. They are looking for the little things that will take their fundamentals from very good to flawless.

Beginners know they need to learn everything
Some Intermediate players often think they don't need to learn anything
Pros understand they can always learn something
