Collar Finish

Hi,
I was taking down two shafts and used some soft rubber around the collar before putting the shaft into the lathe. After taking the shafts down I noticed I had damaged the finish. There are two dings in each shaft collars. I will not be using this method again. I will use the lathe pins.
My question is; What is the best way to repair the finish?

Sorry to say but refinishing the shaft is the only option. After removing the finish swell the dents sand and refinish. If there is just marks in the finish you maybe able to wet sand polish them out.

Wet sand? and what kind of polish?
