Comparing Spots

Ok fellas,

Here is the question. How much stronger is giving someone the call 7 and 8 compared to the wild 8 (where you can luck the 8 or 9 ball in anywhere at any time and it counts)? Last year I gave someone the call 7 and 8 and played them for 4 hours. The score ended up being tied. This year I played the same guy for about 2 hours and I gave him the wild 8. This time I finished 1 game ahead of him. Is there really that big of a discrepancy in either of the spots? Has my opponents game improved? I know that during our last session I finished with 16 games and he had 15. He made the 8 on the break 3 times. The 9 on the break 2 times and had either a billiard or combination on the 8 on 4 more occasions. Let me know what you think.

I think the spots are about equal. The added weight of "luck" plays a huge factor. Anthony I think I know who you played. I don't believe he can win with either of the spots over the long haul.

If the guy has a really strong break or pisses a lot of balls in the wild 8 is better.

If he can run out and shoot good combos and caroms then the call 7,8 is better.

But usually if you are spotting someone and then a year later you play them again they have gotten better. Very few people I know that gamble frequently stay at the same speed for long.

Might want to try and give him the last three next time if he can't run out real good.

We had a discussion about this the other day. Which is better: Last three or wild 8? I prefer the last three because the spot can never be taken away. Other guy said he wanted the 8 so it could go on the break.

If it is wild on the break the weight always seems to be more a part of the outcome but, IMO the most important factor in any weight given is how well it is used agaist you. Some use their weight very well and some don't.

Personally, I would rather get the last three than the wild 8, and I would rather get the 7,8,9 than either the last three or the 8.

But I'd prefer the break, especially on a loose table.

I read the original post as giving money balls, 7,8,9 vs. 8,9.

The 7,8,9 is HUGE.

That is a tough spot to give to anyone that can shoot & stop, especially if they will choose to play safe instead of shooting a wild shot.

Sounds like you should give him the 8 again, and BUST HIM! He kinda pooped out on 6 games, as you say...

Good luck- let us know!
