Ok, so i found a nice Canadian made dufferin and want to get it made into a nice 2 piece. Have contacted a local builder to do the conversion....just wondering what exactly to do. I know..joint pin....then i figure phenolitic [sp] on butt and at joint, new tip...what else should i do? retaper the shaft? I see lots of conversions on here, and every one seems to do it a little different. So what should i have done, to make it a great playing cue..sorry, but cost IS a factor. TIA

What type of material at the joint, if any, and what type of pin depends on personal preference. Beyond that, the things I would want done are a new ferrule, a good tip (like a sniper or moori), taper the shaft to the size and taper that I'm used to, and weighting/balancing to a weight/balance that is close to what I am used to.

When someone brings in a house cue to be made into a trapper I merely cut in two and put in a pin. When I build a trapper I use a quality exotic wood butt blank, re taper the butt, install a weight system, install a contrasting (usually Birdseye or curl maple) 1" sleeve near the end of the butt so that the points end up being closer to the joint, put on a joint and butt cap and usually some deco-rings, make a new shaft with quality wood and put on a finish. I also inlay some small ivory rings with a contrasting material in there center to make the ends of the points where they are square look better.

To cut your house cue in half and insert a radial pin I charge 35.00. To build the complete cue as stated above is 325.00. When you do your housecue you can just do the cut and install a pin or you can add what ever you think it needs from the list above.

On a Dufferon house cue I don't recommend anything other than just cutting the cue in half and putting on a good tip. The shaft is made from poor quality wood and if it is straight chances are it won't stay that way long so why spend 60.00 to 90.00 for a good tip, ferrule and re taper when a new good shaft doesn't cost much more. Same with a phenolic joint and butt cap. If installed correctly then the cue needs refinished. Once again, more money than the finished product is worth.

If you want to go as cheap as you can, just have him cut it in half & install a joint screw. When you cut the Q in half you will end up with a slight step, at the joint. Again if you want it cheap, have him retaper the shaft & sand it smooth all of the way to a point just past the joint. That way he won't have to refinish the joint area. I do this for $50.
