Hey. We're moving from Massachusetts to Cookeville in a couple of weeks. Are there any orgainzed leagues or regular tournaments near Cookeville? My husband has played APA, BCA and Valley League for years and is hoping to find a pool league. We don't know anybody in Cookeville and pool is one way to meet new people. He plays on one team now in New Hampshire which is an hour away so he doesn't mind driving. What local spots can he go to to play pool? And, we're moving our pool table. Any ideas on who we can contact to set it up? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I can't answer your questions, but I know for a fact there are some forum members from this area who will answer your questions.

That said, as far as pool goes, I think your husband is going to like Tennessee. There are many pool players from Tennessee.

There is a pool room in Cookesville, I think. I remember reading about a player named Bobby Pickle in action at a pool room in Cookesville.

Getting your table moved and set up is going to be VERY expensive. If it is not an heirloom or special table, I would sell it and buy another one when you get to Tennessee.

Good luck on your move! People in Tennessee are genuinely nice, welcoming, and friendly.

I just moved from Cookeville last fall. Part of the reason was that there are no leagues, no social pool rooms, and noone that promotes pool around Cookeville except in a gambling nature. I called the APA, and they don't even have a rep for the counties around Cookeville, so there is no APA in the area. No BCA or TAP either. I talked to a couple of people in town who did play APA, but they drove to Nashville to play, around 80 miles. And the leagues there are great. So if you don't mind driving a little over an hour to play at JOB's, you should be OK. There are some players in town, and a couple of rooms, but most of the play involves bangers or gambling. At least that is the way that it was when I moved last November..........Golf seems to be the big sport in Cookeville for socializing and meeting new people.

Cookeville has alot of players, so I don't think it would be hard to get something organized. In fact, I think Bobby Pickle was trying to do that at the Cue. Good luck. Hopefully things are better for league and social players there now.

We're using a moving company so the table is one more thing to go on the van. It's a Gold Crown III hy husband refuses to part with.

Thanks for the information. When we decided to move it never crossed our minds they didn't have leagues. We're hoping for an in house league even if in another town. Hopefully he can find the Cookeville guys who drive to Nashville. We'll call the APA office and get the Nashivlle rep and ask them for Cookeville players. Maybe more leagues up north due to the long winters? At least the drive to Nashville wouldn't involve snow. Guaranteed on Tuesdays when he had pool in NH it would be snowing. It's difficult explaning to me why he has to drive an hour to shoot pool and we are receiving 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour! We both golf and started that sport since most of the leagues up here take the summer off. Golf gave us something to do.

For pick up games, The Cue is the place to go. It's a smallish, old time pool hall with generally excellent tables...mostly Diamond bar boxes and a few 9 footers. Generally, pretty nice people.

Jim

Also, for an excellent table mechanic, call JOBs in Nashville (Madison) and ask for the contact information for Ricky Williams (I think that's his last name).

He takes care of my table and does an excellent job.

Regards,
Jim
