Hi fellow pool addicts,

At one time or another, some old timer or great player may have taught you something that has helped in your pool game.

I'm talking about little things that fill in the cracks and gaps in your game.

Here is a gift that keeps on giving. I can't remember who first told me this, but everyone I have mentioned this technique to agrees that it does indeed help...

You know when the cueball is frozen on the rail (or close to frozen) ???

For most, it is difficult to get a confident stroke and follow through on the shot and there is always the fear of miscuing. One simple thing that helps is to grip the back end of the cue a little tighter than normal. Not a deathgrip, but 2x-4x tighter than normal. It just seems to help "guide" the cue into the top half of the cueball and deliver a good stroke.

One thing that I also do on this shot is to apply a little downward pressure on the shaft by tilting my grip hand foward a little bit. This seems to help to.

Set up various QB frozen to the rail shots and try it, you may be surprised.

See ya - and please chime in with anything you may have

well, both of my instructors (one who is obvious, and the other being a WPBA Player) both tell me when the cue ball is frozen to the rail, you should shorten your stroke? guess to each their own.

a little piece of advice that i learned from Tom Rossman years ago was also about the rails. this might seem obvious to the rest of you posters, but at the time i was somewhat green, and didnt think along these lines. i played a shot in front of Tom, and missed position. he asked why i hit the shot so easy? i said i didnt want to go too long. then he asks "Why didnt you stroke the shot harder, more confidently, and use the rail to bounce you back into position?"

using rails to bounce into position was, at the time, something that was new to me.

just my $.02

Something i learned from watching an accu-stats tape where jim rempe was doing commentary.....whenever you have to shoot a shot jacked up, instead of looking at the object ball keep your eyes on the cueball instead.

Here is another shot that has helped me on many, many occasions... It never occured to be because of the distance and the fact it was on the long rail.

An old timer by the name of Flash (RIP) showed me this shot. Actually he laughed at my feeble attempt during a money game, called me over, and then showed me the light......It can get you out of a lot of jams.

This is best positioned when object ball is a little bit off the rail. With a RAIL-FIRST hit you avoid the scratch, and can get the cuball to the middle of the table relatively easy considering the difficulty of all other options.

I shoot rail kicks like this (the draw makes a worls of difference, just aim further down the rail than you would normally shoot):

)END

Good point Frank. For those wondering why one would shoot the kick like this, it is because you get a flatter angle into the object ball, thus increasing the chances to pocket it.

START(

)END

Notice the curved path and better angle of approach.

Again, great point Frank!

The guy that showed me this regretted it almost immediately. Don't you love those kind of hints. :D
