Coring and wood choices

Can anybody tell me what the benefits and detrimental effects coring has on the playability of a cue? Is it better to avoid coring if possible? What kind of woods can be used in the handle of a butt without coring that will not adversely affect weight or balance? Thanks.

Hi chris; A heavier or lighter wood can be used as a core, to help control weight or balance. Or coring can be used, just to stabilize a wood, that is fragile or one that tends to warp. I have been coring heavy woods with lighter ones for 15 years & more unstable woods with laminated cores for about 5 years. I personally don't think it affects the hit much, but it does really help in balancing the cue. If there is any other benefit it might be that if you cored ALL of your wood, with the same type of wood, you would probably have a more uniform hit from wood to wood...JER
