Coring Bit

Can anyone direct me to a good coring bit setup. I want to be able to core the forearm or handle. I've got a big lathe so power is not a problem. I've heard of one that has an air setup on it to help keep the bit cool and chips out of your way. Can anyone confirm a setup like that? Thanks for the input.

I don't know what kind of set-up you have on your lathe but as Joey just posted, I got mine from Drill Masters and the man I talked to was familiar with boring cues and he recommended the right angle for the carbide to be cut for cutting woods instead of metals. I have a quick change tool post on my lathe and the drill is mounted in a boring bar holder so that it takes me less than a minute to set-up for boring with the automatic feed on the lathe. Does an extremely good job and in fact I core almost all of my cues, even many of the maple ones.

I am setting up a Smithy BZ239 for my coring. I have an Aloris quick change toolpost setup. Only have the turning and facing holder right now. But I had planned to get the Boring setup at a later time. Seems like the only way to go so you can work the forearm pieces faster without having the warping problems. Would be cool to work with some of the exotics as well that would be impossible to use otherwise.

Ordered mine yesterday. Very helpful, and the build the bits to fit the lathe or machine you are going to use. Mine will mount directly into the tailstock of my porper,

Tailstock?
How do you blow the chips, Chris?
I thought they built them all to be held by a boring bar holder.
thnx

Coring bit (gun drill)

If anyone is interested in a gun drill for coring forearms and handles I bought two and only need 1. Will sell the unused one for $125.00 plus $10.00 shipping.
It is a Drillmaster part number GA075801800XABX. In other words it is 18" with a 5/8" diam tang, side air driver, R3 contour, .0015" backtaper. It bores a .7580" hole which equates to a 3/4" core. It is custom made for boring cues. You need a 5/8" chuck on your tailstock or a 5/8" boring bar holder for your tool post. Or, I will swap for one that drills a 5/8 inch hole.

He is building the bit with the air inlet in front of where it mounts in the tailstock. It should slide right inside the Porper tailstock and secured with the set screw.
